Scripted Quest: Atonement for Paladins

  • Quite simple. To encourage PC paladins taking risks in terms of roleplay, falling from grace is a fear of many. If memory serves, there was a paladin specific quest in V2. So, I combined the idea of both, and came up with an idea.

A quest, designed like Tyche crypt, with four paths, each for every alignment. That allows you to make monsters unique to the alignment. Complete the quest, and gain atonement. The quest would be tough, be doable from 6-X level, but most be soloed.

Stick a merchant with paladin loot at the end.

Alignment restrict it, so that no CG, LE, LG or CE character can take it, to ensure paladins do not simply solo it every reset.

  • There are... alot, of issues with this. Mainly, that falling from grace isn't just a mechanical thing. It's a story. It's character development and fixing it by running some quest no matter the narrative of it will never compare to the story that could take place if a Paladin fell, and then sat, talked to and laid out a plan, plot and story with a DM for them and their allies to tell and experience, exploring the characters, what it means to be a Paladin, the struggles of it, even the impracticality of it, and the sacrifice(s) you have to make.

Secondly, if it gave paladin loot, it would cause a few people to go "Man, imagine if I had that loot that the fallen paladin quest gives", then they purposefully fall and quickly smash the quest before anyone notices to grab the gear.

    This.

Edit: If a paladin, through his story, falls from grace and truly seeks atonement IG/IC, the DMs will know this and determine when/if it is accomplished.

  • Can't say I'm keen on it, it seems to much a easy "fix button" for a serous rp event.

  • Maybe a quest than increase or decrease your alignment points? But not serve as a gease.

We want to tell stories, people should view playing a fallen paladin as a chance to tell a redemption story and not a reason to 'grind' to recover alignment.
