Here's a hint, get a phrasebook and learn the following in every language you might need:
Other than having to break out a sketchbook in a small town in the Czech Republic to get to a bar and missing my stop for the train station in Florence by 3 miles which left me shouting at the bus driver in English while he shouted at me in Italian it's been good enough. Stress comes when you have no idea where you are, no idea where you're going and can't talk to anyone.
You're going to run into tourist overload in any city that is a tourist destination that's also a real city- Rome, Paris, London, New York, etc. If you're some place like Venice or the entire state of Hawaii and most of the Mexican coastal Yucatan where there is no business but tourist business, people tend to be nicer to you because they want, nay need your money. You stop a stock broker who lives in London outside his $3 million apartment and ask for directions to the Cinderella's Palace and you're the 4000th person to do so that month, he might be a bit snippy.
Here's the deal- people live in these places. These places are working cities. Paris is not Disneyland. Not everyone in Rome wants to dress up like Mickey Mouse and dance for the tourist crowd.
If you're visiting someplace, spend two hours learning a little language and culture before you hit the ground. It's important to understand why one can't enter an operational Catholic basilica wearing a "I love NY" tang-top half shirt, short skirt and flip flops.
Let's be clear as well- the French can be quite nice. Parisians are 100% across the board assholes ;)

That's been talked about for a long time over here, Dr Ôta's article was published in 1991, and he's been treating a few people every year since 1998. I'd be curious to know why this old article rose to this rank.
And although we have many places to visit other than Paris, I'll have to admit that no other area has this many things to see in such a small area.Oh, anf, for Nikko, as far as I know, every sort of sausage is made from seasoned ground meat stuffed into some animal's intestine lining :P
