Suggested Changes: Healing and Repair Kits

  • So in Discord earlier, I brought up that a cleric shouldn't be getting outdone on healing kit usage, given the archetype of a cleric being a healer.

What I suggest is that clerics of some domains should received improved innate bonuses towards healing kits.

And the same can be same for repair kits too. I don't see why a Gond cleric shouldn't be naturally better at using a repair kit over say, a Mystran or a Tyrran.

The domains that I think should affect the results from healing kits:

    • Healing

    • Renewal

    For Repair Kits

    • Metal

    • Knowledge

Alternatively, a check for deity -> domains could do it just as well.

  • Honestly I don't see how they are out done.

If they are getting out done by other classes such as Fighters, Monks, Rogues, etc. then it's likely more that the Cleric is not focusing in the Heal skill as much as the other PC is. Clerics naturally have high Wisdom which is the Stat Heal relies on.

The only class the comes to mind that uses heal kits better then a cleric is a bard because they have the healing song. However, in that same vain the heal song is strictly better then any heal kit or even repair kit because it's free and effects everyone. This is more a problem with Heal song being unbalanced then heal kits though.

  • I'm not in favor of this, as healing isn't magical.

As far as I know, clerics have spells for healing, and would mostly rely on such, while a fighter field doctor or a scientist in anatomy would be way more specialized in non-magic medecine and health.

  • @lord_monotone

It's mostly the RNG nature of healing kits.

This Discord convo is the relevant one:

healing kits do do the long term healing though, so having one of those to use on others prior to resting means that so long as they havent got a disease or poison effect running your medicine kit isnt used up
Moosh - Today at 12:26 PM
Do medicine bags have a lower DC to treat then since they don't offer the HP restore?
khampig - Today at 12:27 PM
    nope
    DC 20 all the time
    while you roll 1-5
Forte - Today at 12:27 PM
    ^
max heal points, level 10, cleric
    still get rekt
saw this happen so much on Shauna at 10 and 11
    😦
HellzYeah - Today at 12:28 PM
    Like you would think
    Realistically
You would roll over 10 50% of the time
    But no
I guess it just doesn't work that way
Forte - Today at 12:28 PM
tbh if it wasn't for the fact adding it now instead of putting it on a v6 checklist
    would be better-
Moosh - Today at 12:28 PM
And the healing kits +1, +3, +6 add to your skill plus your roll?
HellzYeah - Today at 12:29 PM
    So
Forte - Today at 12:29 PM
I'd say make it where clerics and druids are the best at heal kit usage. With clerics being more proficient if they have certain Domains
HellzYeah - Today at 12:29 PM
The way healing kits work is
Forte - Today at 12:29 PM
IE a Healing domain cleric should not be getting outhealed by a fighter or a rogue
HellzYeah - Today at 12:29 PM
    Its your roll +mod
    minus 10
    Times whatever the kit is
Forte - Today at 12:29 PM
And you can make it where Gond clerics (as an example) with the metal domain are batshit stronk on Warforged repair kits.

My comment about adding was written wrongly, I'd meant it'd be better to put it on a v6 checklist instead of trying to add it now.

  • I don't think giving them a bonus to the heal skill is game breaking, seeing as you can't use healing kits in combat outside of neutralizing -further- drain effects. That said, as wisdom is a clerics primary stat and they have heal as a class skill, there's no reason a cleric should ever be outdone by another person unless that other person is higher level or has an item/feat giving them a skill bonus.

  • Clerics are already pretty strong, if not the strongest though. >.>

  • Storyteller [DM]

why should a cleric be better than the fighter whose role is a battlefield medic, or the mage whose specialist field is anatomy etc etc?

they already will generally have a slightly higher maximum anyway due to it being a wisdom based skill but...
    why change something that works?
take sf heal if you want to be the best?

  • In theory, the best option would be the domains, because it makes the most sense.

In practice, I'd probably prefer to go for deities, simply because checking domains in a script sucks ass for various reasons (Especially with the override based special domain method we use now, not a problem when EE comes out though, so might be ok then)

But having said that, making an extensive list of domains with a check for them all, also sucks ass! it's just it would be less bug prone.

  • Clerics are the best at using healing kits (along with druids)
It's a wisdom based skill, which is their highest stat (and they've the ability to buff it)

The only people who outdo them at it are people who invest in skill focus feats.

  • Admin [DM]

If you're willing to script it, by all means. 🙂

  • Could we make it so skill focus:Heal does more than just having +3 heal skill?

Double the rate at which they heal.. for example.

  • I mean, if you really want them to be better, just give the domains in question Skill Focus: Heal and Craft Armor respectively, however I do not see how there even is a problem here.

  • I don't see the problem.

Healing kits are for out of combat, clerics are for in-combat.

I never take heal, it just gives you (even more) gold.

If anything I'd suggest making Heal even better. For example, SF: Heal could increase the resulting roll by 25%.

  • I think the real problem is that Repair kit +6s don't work still
