Stop resource hoarding

  • "Hey @CrystalRL I need some wood stuff for this plot of mine!"

    "Um. Alright. How much?"

    "Oh, about 100 planks."

    ...

This is incredibly boring and generates very little RP when I'm out solo farming to meet your quota. Bigger numbers does not make it more fun - it makes it less fun.

Same goes for the people asking me to supply them en masse with wooden weapons, armors, and shields.

  • I preffer we took the approach of looking for an specific glade and barter a deal with the local druid? Or beat its living ass?

Least thats how I am going with my Sims approach lately.

  • You can always say no, or demand an exorbitant price because you hate it.

  • There's a lot of "Stuff" in the module.

Try to set limits that are about one to three treks per resource, and make it a bunch of mini "Quests" which send people around various regions.

  • Tell them to make a deal with house mertoi for her lumberers to provide wood, in exchange for fixing one of her many lycan problems.

Or something of the sort, lack of creativity should be responded to by brainstorming. Rather than just telling the person their idea sucks.

  • Which then requires DM interaction. They're probably trying to do that portion of their plot without a DM.

  • You don't need dm attention in order to run around the areas near Mertoi's lands and killing shit. Mertoi's got some property represented in game, with monsters showing up near and around it. You just drop a friendly letter saying "hey I need this, gonna start doing that, please love me"

And go on your killing spree. Then if a dm wants to drop you a final task, they can.

Note: There's a big difference between asking a dm to run a 3 hour event for you, and just asking a dm if they can just put a note in your file saying (when he does do this thing, assume he's got what he needs, cause he did put the work in for it)

  • @chips That's a lot more helpful, that clarification 🙂

  • The idea is obviously not for you to go out alone and chop wood. It's meant for you as an excuse to involve people and have fun with them in patrols outside the city while gathering materials, much like killing shit is an excuse to involve people and have fun with them.

If someone orders that many planks from you, it must mean they want you to dedicate time involving and having fun with everyone else. It doesn't mean you are supposed to spend your next week doing nothing but cutting down trees.

  • If they want to take groups out for it, they'd do it themselves.

If you tell me to go get wood, I will just go the bleep out and get it. Even if it requires me setting a timer to farm it. A majority of players don't enjoy exploring, because it is not rewarding. It's why I have a stealth build to explore - to cut down on resources used, so I won't be strapped for supplies.

The higher the number is, the less likely I will bring people with me. 100 planks means 200 piece of occasio. It would take far LONGER to do it with crews than for me to gather it. I'd rather spend party time doing questing, or exploring with people who actually enjoy exploring.

  • I would just say no, because there is no way I would ever do that. it would be perfectly IC to refuse to do this, your time is valuable..

  • I also bring this up because I've received SEVERAL of these requests as of late. It's not fun to do the same task over and over and over again. See: Gypsy quest.

  • So don't do them!

If someone enjoys this, let them do it.

If you think its easier to go do it alone without a group, even when its clear someone is trying to encourage you to get a group; don't do it!

But please, why come here and tell people how they can and can't pursue things they want to do? That's the part that confuses me, why does it affect you?

  • It was fun for me when it started. But now it's become equivocal to hedge magic. "Fetch ingredients, win plots."

It's not creative. What Applefritos suggested was - which is part of the reason I opened up the thread, to get suggestions on what else I could do. He addressed my concerns.

  • @crystalrl Ok....but again. You don't have to do it, hence my confusion. You're not forced to roleplay a particular style, feel free to go do something else or pursue another avenue.

DMs try to provide many different ways to play. If you want to hunt down rare reagents for hedge magic, please do! If you want to gather 1000 stones to build a chimney, please do! If you want to make a stealth build to go explore the wilds, please do!

But I'm a little concerned/worried, if someone logs in and tells other people what they should do in game when we want the options open.

  • It's a lot of OOC stuff too, Moloch. It's the same players doing this. Consistently. They probably come to me because I let it go on for so long.

I don't mind doing grunt work, since I can multitask it. But these people are also messaging me OOG to do it, instead of finding my character. It's pretty upsetting.

  • Admin [DM]

then tell them to find you ig and do it properly.

    That easy, really.

  • A majority of players don't enjoy exploring, because it is not rewarding

It seems like there is an underlying issue here that's causing the strife to me. Hopefully, this will be properly addressed in v6: how to make exploration more entertaining than it is now, so this issue won't exist in v6. What motivates people to explore and do shit with everyone else?

I have high fatih in the current DM teams ability to make exploration a fun and enjoyable experience for players to do in the future aside from questing. It should not be about resource gathering, but spending time with other players.

Gotcha, that makes so much sense. What I hear now is you saying you want people to stop bothering you OOC to do something you don't enjoy! There I agree 100%. If anyone bothers you OOC, please let us DMs know, and we'll politely tell them to stop.

Yes, actually, I just need someone to script somethings for me.
