Subraces and Languages
-
So apparently this isn't common knowledge anymore. Certain subraces (I believe only application-based ones) have a free bonus language on creation.
To the best of my knowledge, the following receive bonus languages for free, regardless of INT modifier:
-
Aasimar - Celestial
-
Tiefling - Abyssal OR Infernal, player's choice
The ones I'm not sure about, but I believe do as well:
-
Drow - Undercommon, Drow, Elven
-
Duergar - Undercommon, Dwarven
-
Svirfneblin - Undercommon, Gnome
-
Genasi - Elemental language relevant to their type
-
Dragonborn - Draconic
So basically this is serving as a reminder about languages as well as asking for DM confirmation about these subraces, and open discussion to the rest of the playerbase.

Neither Aasimar nor tiefling receive these bonus languages to my knowledge.
I know Jinx receives the Abyssal language by default.
The underdark races definitely receive undercommon.
I'm unsure about the last two, but 99% sure Dragonborn doesn't get draconic either.

Currently playing a Tiefling - I do not have Abyssal or Infernal.

This just reinforces what I said in the OP. :D
It really needs to be common knowledge again, Polaris confirmed in Discord last Monday (Jan 22, 2018) that Aasimars and tieflings do receive a free bonus racial language.

Half Dragons get draconic. Not sure about dragon born
-
The only times ive gotten subrace languages as a tiefling is when i have specifically requested them at creation.
-
It probably isn't an auto spawn on creation; But the subrace posts can be updated.
I don't think this needs a script, since you need a DM to get setup anyway, you can ask them for it then. But some subraces definitely do receive bonus languages, though not all. Also not we do not support a few languages like Elemental, which are not a part of the DMFI system.
I remember StrawMan making a post to create new languages though, so players can make the missing ones if something isn't on the list he posted.

Elemental is a catchall term for the 4 elements like Ignan and the other three. :D
It doesn't look like its ingame anyway, for some reason I thought the elemental tongues were supported.

Also post from 2008 supporting that Aasimar/tiefling receive bonus languages for free.
That being said, it's probably long over due, as you noted, for a subrace page updating as well as languages so players are more informed on what they may've missed out on.
But yes it's something oyu have to tell a DM on creation (or during playing a subrace, probably...)In both cases of me playing a subrace that qualified, I asked a DM both times and it was granted.

If you are a tiefling who was raised solely by humans, and taught nothing other than Common, would you know abyssal/infernal?
Or any other combo as this?
-
I believe it's like that due to PnP considerations. As noted, it's something really worth updating. Especially since it'll be more of a concern in v6 with new subrace chars.
-
I suppose the real question is, do Demons know Abyssal naturally or do they have schools in the Abyss?
Same for Devils and the Hells? If not, it has to be genetic and passed down through blood, which would be why Tieflings could know it.
-
I mean, in any case, I've yet to see a DM refuse the language when a PC asked for it (and it makes sense for the subrace).
Definitely don't need a scripted system for this when a DM has to set you up anyway, though we could make one. It's just not really needed.
The common races get it because DMFI gave it to them, we didn't have to code that in manually.
