Apped Characters

  • So I apped an assimar. I played my aasimar. his plot did not take off around him, as other factions had more access to the story he was trying to break in to ((it happens, I'm not salty about it)) so when that plot basically wrapped up, i took my app character and offered it as a convert to a player that did an awesome thing. He converted in the face of her divine might etc.

So I guess my question is, should my character retire since basically the story I apped for is gone now? I enjoy the character, I enjoy the players he has surrounded himself with, but he is totally off the app rails as it were.

    opinions?

  • @people

I am firmly of the opinion that stories take shape in the writing of them. This is especially true in collaborative storytelling, however I think it's also important that those around you work to help you find a new direction if you enjoy playing the character.

Arturian is going to find a letter here shortly detailing exactly that idea. 🙂

  • Play and enjoy your character. Set it aside when you want to or feel like doing something new. If it is an app character, make sure you are actively trying to do some things that keep people logging in, run quest trains, host events, contests, foster competition, or create and help maintain a player faction.

  • I am a firm believer that concepts are just an idea of what you want to do, the best thing is when the world can change the direction you wanted to go and take you for a ride.

When I made Edward I had no plan to do any of the things I ended up doing, life is good.

If the DMs actually enforced players to follow the goals players wrote in their apps, we would have no time for anything else. It's cool, if you're having fun go for it.

The short version: "If you're having fun, keep playing your character. Ultimately, you're the one who decides if you want to retire your character or not."

Keep in mind, when I'm about to say everything, I'm very basic. So here we go...

This conversation arose the other day when my friends and I were conversing. We came up with several points:

    1. Even if you can't foresee anything happening to your character, as long as you exist and continue to RP, you'll eventually run into other people's plots and probably be involved somehow.
For example, your previous infernalist group automatically involved other people because you had to take blood from other PCs. This gave an opportunity for others to be a part of your plot.

    2. As long as you involve your character with others(casual RP, quest, or explore), things tend to fall into your lap. People will invite you or even come find you because of your reputation. You don't have to do anything amazing to have a reputation worthy of someone noting your character.
For example, Arturian was well on our Banites's radar when you RPed that you were looking for a new deity or something to grant Arturian power to kill the Albino Werewolf and Malarites.

    3. Be persistent, insert yourself into things. If you notice something fun, find ways on how your character would be a part of it. For example, we wanted our Banite characters to join in on the Albino Werewolf hunt. So we decided to work towards making a shrine of Bane in Eastway. We participated in defences and when the time came, a shrine of Bane was put up; as well as, the conversion of Lord Patricia Mertoi. This a more concrete IC reason for our characters to join in on the hunt. Our characters wanted to defend Eastway due to the patron deity being Bane there.

    4. Commit to something, someone, or a group of people. People will notice you if you're constantly trying to do something or working with a group of people.
For example, Ophirae @TheTwistingWind was working on her Tilverton plot forever days and she wasn't getting a lot of attention, but she was committed to it and never gave up. You can see how well that paid off now. In the example of committing to someone or a group of people, I made two of my characters involved in someway with Ophirae. It was either be her apprentice and have my character gain some sort of IC power (alchemy/strengthening my barghest squire) or make a ballad about her progress with Tilverton. (Of course, in the end, I couldn't find any good enough reason for Camila to work with people who blatantly insulted her God.)

I'm generally not a person who is good at starting things off, but I tend to find it more easy to work off of things that already exist or that other people come up with. I hope my way of plotting helped you. 🙂

  • Yeah, do whatever keeps you logging in. If you are excited about a new concept, dump this one and do that, if quitting this will make you not login, then don't.

Just a game, @people , don't take it so seriously.

    Amen

  • The sort of, deal, is - you create fun and keep people wanting to log in - so you get a sweet character with special stuff in return.

it's all apps are for really, for the DMs to see you have a cool plan to create fun.
as long as fun is being made for others and not just you, it's working fine. weather you follow the plan or not doesn't matter.

  • Yes- as far as I am concerned, all I want in return for giving players perks is, you keep people logging in, however you want to do this, by keeping people interested. If you do this, I will give you whatever you want, including special cyb0r with my DM avatar.

  • @polaris

    10/10, would recommend

Oh, is Arabel a social server? 😨

Second, what racial group is your Avatar?

  • Word. Alright.

  • Polaris's DM avatar is white trash.

  • ...
That was a joke. New players reading this, please do NOT offer Cyb0r as an incentive for logging in. 😉 Not "that" kind of server!
