Contest: Who Did Cassiel Leave His Kingdom To?
-
If the new boss is too different, the Sheriffs will change. Pesonally I'm not for that. Others may be.

I'd be dissapointed if the successful actions of the regicide team did not make a major change. If Cassiel's replacement is a Cassiel Clone and there is no change in the feel of Cassiel's faction and the server as a whole, you have to ask yourselves what the whole point of the attack was for, and why anyone should bother trying to bump off high profile NPCs.
If players successfully achieve a major coup, the server must reflect that success or players will stop bothering to attempt such again.
By all means, the DMs should create a new NPC that has a similar strength of character to Cassiel, but introduce him in a couple of months time, slowly and create a new field for him to work inside. Perhaps bring a new rich pirate to bear, or allow one of the Innkeepers of Arabel to gain political power and prestige through aquisition of property in the city.

Yes, no Cassiel clone.
The only way Cassiel returns is if his killers are somehow caught very soon.

I may not be very active today or sunday, but I promise to have Lano IG and where it is possible for him to be caught for atleast several hours this week.
Not to say for a second I plan on letting any of you do it, but I will make it possible.

I say his bastard and half…ready for it...elven son. The reason he hated elves so much, the seed of his long lost elven love that never was to be fruitful apart from, well his only successor. The son could even bring his mother to live in the palace with him. A happy ending family story, apart from the father being dead.
That is if we go for something linear.
Otherwise I guess most would prefer a will that leaves some kind of competition between a few factions to claim the throne through certain quests.
I 'd also love it if it would be between the old noble houses of Arabel, namely Bhaliir, Thond and Deschuur. (Alright Fezznick too...). It could be some form of council even.Since reviving old factions seems unlikely though, perhaps they could hold on to the government of the place until an heir is found?
End of random thoughts.

For reasons not known to any of you, Cassiel doesn't have and never would have children…

@Foba:
Personally, I do not like the idea of letting players decide. Cassiel was paramount in making th Sheriffs what they are. He "represented" them, and the way they worked/acted. A new boss should be as similar to him as possible, or we risk to change the flavour of the whole faction.
Well lets see what a Anti-Cassiel replacement would bring. The sheriffs would probably be a bit pissed at the changes. There is the chance that they collapse, revolt, or just adapt. There are many things that can happen and it's almost entirely up to the players! It's Change and change is good no matter how bad it looks. We gotta roll with the punches! It would actually add to the server rather then take away really.
And as stated, why kill one when another will just pop up again.
-
I'm not so sure I agree with Foba. Cassiel formed the Sheriffs, but as anyone who's ever interacted with him knows, he's ruthlessly apathetic. He wanted power, and he didn't care how people earned it, or (more or less) who they pissed off, and who they brought on as allies, as long as they were successful. This allowed for extreme differing personalities within the Sheriffs.
There was already talk about changing the Sheriff faction, because of the move to the East Way, but now it seems like it's absolutely necessary.
I think though, that while Cassiel is a very careful man, and wouldn't likely leave the Kingdom without a leader, the best way to proceed (assuming he remains dead) is to revisit the old Fezznick plot between Loretta and Rolo's wife. I'd rather see the players affect who becomes the new King/Queen. It would be nice to see Cassiel leave it to someone in his will, but some loophole, or former promise brings a radically different NPC to claim it, then of course, the PCs split sides of support.
Like: Thond vs. Veneith!

I don't think I could have explained Cassiel better myself. And it is exactly this "freedom" that I would like to see with the new leader as well, because it is, in my eyes, the key stone of the Sheriffs as a concept.
-
Fair point. I think it can be duplicated though, by revisiting the council idea. I promise not to break it this time.

Interesting idea! I approve. Perhaps one looking towards Cormyr, one looking towards the Zhents. Both of them watching Arabel with caution if not outright hostility. This would maintain a decent three way political mire for the players to mess with!
Having said that, I say that the Sheriffs were great. Now lets do something new.

Cassiel's will states that the most worthy man is to follow him and the worthiest, is the most wealthy. The will prescribes that whoever donates the most wealth into the treasury of the east way will become it's new king.
PCs scramble to try to collect valuable relics and gold and such, to follow in his footsteps.
