Spawn Warnings?
-
I am fairly certain I got chewed by some dire wolves tonight because I was in the wrong place when a party started a quest.
Is there any way the spawns at least for the outdoor quests could be "delayed" with a short warning message so other players wandering around the area won't get hammered by a massive monster spawn meant for five players twice their level?
Perhaps a "you hear howling in the distance" or "you have a feeling of impending doom"?

Most quests take place in areas that can only be accessed by the people taking the quest. Most likely you were attacked by a random spawn, which frequently appear in the areas outside the city and can vary in difficulty from easy to very difficult.
Caution should be taken when travelling outside the city.

Whether a quest spawn or a normal server spawn it would be nice to have a warning. "You are likely to be eaten by a grue…"
Having creatures that don't use stealth appear next to my character is very frustrating, especially trying to role-play a druid who should spend more time outside the city than in it. I feel kinda silly communing with nature on Arabel's drawbridge.

Creatures shouldn't spawn right next to your character if you're already in an area. Sometimes they'll wander near transitions, but thats just due to random wandering scripts.
If the creatures just appeared out of nowhere right next to you inform a DM of where and when it occurred in the Bug Reports forum. Keep in mind some creatures do wander around in stealth mode, including dire wolves.
Also, playing a druid can be dangerous. The areas outside the city are often full of dangerous monsters, however, they can usually be avoided or dealt with by other means (finding other PCs to help slay them, for example). I've played druids before, and none have ever gotten above level 4. However, it -is- possible to travel the wilds as a low level druid if you learn the tricks. It will always be risky, but thats just part of the job.
If you're unsure of the best ways to survive as a druid, look to some other players and characters for help. There are several druid characters that can teach you tricks to surviving the wilds as a druid character, just seek them out in game. Gurmbach Fernstrider comes to mind as one, and I'm sure there are a few others out and about as well.

I confirm Jared's assessment of the wilds only in part. It actually is very feasible to survive the wilds by yourself as a lvl 4-5 druid. It even is quite possible as a non-druid, really.
About these dire wolves (and many other animals, actually) they did likely not spawn on you, spawning monsters usually appear to drop out of the sky. Dire wolves, however, are quite good at sneaking, even though they rarely do so.
However, I think there is a spawn point on the new forested ascent that is both a bit too active and a bit too tough. -

Yes, that is the location.
And to whichever DMs worked on it, the new area is VERY impressive visually.

Dier Wolves can and do sneak. If you did not see them before they attacked then likely they were in stealth mode.

Also, get a ranger to guide you, tracking is invaluable when such stealthy creatures run around. As a druid you have an invaluable spell to help you hide and lasts for 10 mins/level, camouflage. It really worths the spell slot. Druids have all the tools needed to survive outside the city walls, stealth is among them. One with the lands also gives a boost but not for such long periods.
I m not saying it ll get you out of every bad situation, dire wolves in packs are deadly. Lost an 8th level cleric by one such spawn, which I never seen happen in the same place.
Other than that dire wolves are pack animals, it makes sense to spawn in small packs. I shouldn't have gone inside a cave perfectly suited for a wolf den alone or unstealthed…
-
Yeah dire wolves are quite able stealthers. The fact they spawn in packs (another argument entirely) usually offsets this since one of six will fail their check and alert you, but not always.
-
Didn't think the wolves had been stealthed but is more likely than having a spawn on top of me.
Didn't mean for this to be Druid Help thread but thanks for offering the advice all.

Spawns very very very very very very rarely spawn on top of you, and if they do it is a bug. All spawn poitns are carefully placed a reasonable distance from the triggers.
I would think it is almost certain it was an issue of stealth and not spawning.

It's not that rare. SOMEONE else can spawn the trigger while you're right on top of the spawn area. Happens quite a lot on quests.

Someone RP a Health and Safety advisor and go about putting up signs saying ''WARNING, WOLVES LIVE HERE THEY SNEAK UP ON YOU''
Everyone wins, apart from the wolves.
-
really.. The wilds are dangerous and I personally tire of people travelling along dark roads all alone without a care in the world.
If you are outside of the city walls you should be expecting wild monsters about. Dangerous Wild monsters that can wtfpwn you in a moments notice.
This is not modern day society where you can go for a stroll in the nature preserve and at most encounter a half-tamed bear looking for some more chocolate.I say make the spawns tougher..
[/end my two shinys]

It's the best way to die two times on the same place, I've just had the pleasure.
My party didn't wait me but run around on the quest area, and spawned three goblins on me.
I've only noticed them when they first hit me, and died in no time.
Still on the fugue I've received a tell saying something like that 'man, what are you doing?':D:D

A character goal could be to fix long yellow flags and sirens to the dangerous local fauna….
But yes, I'm up for MORE danger in the wilds. Druids and Rangers would become a valued commodity.
-
Yeah, really. I rarely get stuff anymore walking around in the wilds with a group! :(
