My character has got pretty high detect skills, and was always planning on taking Ranger levels. However, some people have been telling me that it is inadvisable to have one level of ranger just for Track, and others have told me that the DMs frown against taking level 1 ranger just to get Track.

Can I get a word from the population please.

Tracking uses your average ranger levels, so having one level will make you a less effective tracker than those with more ranger levels. There is no frowning upon this.

Personally, i'm fine with people taking one or two levels of certain classes for their respective benefits - so long as they RP having this with the strengths as well as the relevent commitments - a 1/rogue who does enjoy hitting below the belt, a 1/bard who takes great pleasure in some kind of art (poetry, theater, what have you - carving up bodies), a 1/ranger who has an actively outdoors lifestyle for example, by no means the only way you can portray the class' effect on your character.

And of course, as with any new direction your character takes, if it's possible to then it can be a more fun and unique a way to advance in that new class under tutelage from someone well practiced in it.

Just go vie you more details, mechanically wise I had a character with SkillFocus-Spot, Alertness AND decent wisdom.
Up to 4th/5th level I wasn't able to have but general info when using tracking.

At 6th I was even able to get names of the things I was tracking… so if you plan to have tracking to impress your followers don't be surprised if you believe to be tracking a goblin and end up fighting a bulette.

If Chuck Norris had performed in 300, the film would be called 1.

Lore plays a factor in tracking as well doesnt it?

              [Enter War Wizard Henri]
              Henri: I cast a spell.
              [Exit War Wizard Henri]

Lvl 6 is where the good stuff comes in. You can roll to identify animals with successful AE check. Lvl 7, you can identify magical beasts with lore skill.
So one level of ranger won't help much with tracking, but it is nice to know that you will run into a small, female, gnome, wearing light armor…just don't be surprised if you find an ogre chieftian instead.

level 6 ranger? Or level 6 in general?

Ranger, obviously. Tracking is based on spot, search, lore, AE and ranger levels.

(Roleplay what you take and the DM's will think good of you.)

Scott Keellip - White Knight, killed by Drow
Sir William the Fearless - Fearless! and nice.
Vardix - Black Dragon cultist. Also killed by Drow.
Nihlos Carver - Fear the Reaper
