Transport between locations
-
I mentioned in my "shes dead" post about transportation, which sparked a response, and I am moving it here for discussion if people wish to further continue it, especially with v5 discussion underway, it seems an appropriate time to discuss it
(PS, this is why we need SOME way to get from one town to another. Even if it cost hundreds of gold.)
They are called invisibility potions and only cost about 150g. You mages even get them for free.
spoiler in my case, and it seems rather ridiculous for say a group of 4 level 1-4's to all quaff potions and then sprint down the road, as opposed to "taking the caravan".
-
you drink the potion if you encounter something you cant kill and cant get round.
-
It would be ridicolous to be able to teleport to any destination, especially for 100 gold traveling through the woods should be dangerous.
-
Didn't we have this "the roads are dangerous and you'd best be prepared" discussion for the nth time just a week or two ago?
If you can't kill things on your own and dont remain on the lookout when walking, then cast invisibility or get a potion of it or something before you go. In your case I know this is difficult due to some choices your character had taken, but then there are still other viable options that you need to explore.
If you know you are not able to take a surprise bandit/dire wolf/gypsy/whatever to the face and live for two rounds, then find some means to avoid it or deal with it before setting out. Not that hard. Any build can do it. If you're not willing to spend 150g when going between two locations once in a while then you certainly have no right to whine about it afterwards if something goes wrong. I'm not saying you do, games, but this is a general case.
Also: Caravans get attacked and looted all the time. What do you think the bandits are doing on the roads? And what about all those burning remains of caravans you find all over the place?
We have magical portals that only cost a gem worth 5-10g to use if you know their passwords. Worried about travel? Learn to use them and where they are.
Heck, in your case you even had a third option for free and instant travel that is spoiler, limited as it might be these days.

I don't mean "any" destination and In my case, going to where I was going (Arabel->Crag), I agree it would not make sense.
But it makes a lot of sense between major towns. I'm not talking about my case, nor about the mechanics of it. I've certainly done the drink-n-sprint (or cast-n-sprint) plenty of times myself. I just think the possibility of caravan travel makes more IC sense.
-
We only have one major town and a select few 5-6 other outlying villages. I don't think any of them warrant any teleportation portal.
-
How about a caravan you take that has a fun chance of being RAIDED by MONSTERS on the way?
-
Hire PC bodyguards to keep you safe on the road?
-
I think some more portals could be added near villages. So you can take a different route, facing different spawns. For example, a portal up the frigid cliffs could save you a fight with dire wolves, but you have to risks the giants.
((ignore me if there are such portals already))
-
Caravan-"quest" with level/partypower balanced spawns would be fine.
And an ideal way to do it.Hiring PCs is difficult, if not impossible at low-player count times, not to mention that if no XP is involved, most people wont do it.
For example, last week I could not hire anyone to accompany two wizards for a 5 minute trip into the ruins. For 500 gold..
Because it would interfere with Nada. -

Because it would interfere with Nada. You could just invite people to join you on a trek between towns for the sake of delivering a Fivestar parcel, even if you arn't delivering one yourself. They don't go to every town, but certainly the main ones.
For the sake of getting people to go into the ruins/underdark/helmlands/wherever, it's always touch and go. Sometimes you will get a flood of people wanting an unusual experience, other times everyone will be quite happy carrying on with whatever they are doing.

Mage guild is working towards this IC for its members.
The way forwards is IC action here rather than a forum campaign?

For now, yes. I meant a discussion for V5.
However, Mage guild doing such, and perhaps charging a hefty fee is a great way for it to happen. -

This sounds awesome and would make "fast" traveling more exciting than just paying some guy to teleport you some place. I remember we had a portal system which required people to know the passcodes in order to teleport certain places and usually a gem. I wouldn't mind seeing this make a return either as it encourages PCs to actually go out and find this stuff which is far more fun to do.

This portal system still exists, though cut down drastically.
This caravan idea with random encounters along the way sounds like mad fun. Maybe something akin to the Wyvernwater transportation system?

Because it would interfere with Nada.Seriously some characters that were going on nada's level 1-3 didn't want to escort 2 wizards into the no spellcasting area that can be highly dangerous, and you were surprised about this?
Anyhow.
Why not just walk to the place you want to go and if you meet monsters along the way..you can either..kill them …hide from them,go around them or run away.
Also for those hard to reach places there is the portal system it's hardly used now as it needs gems but it is still there. -
What was the game that you could transport from one place to another but you ran the risk of being "waylaid by enemies on the road and must defend yourself"? Something like that would be cool. You could transport from say, Eveningstar to Flynn, but ran the risk of being attacked along the way - kinda like the dream sequence. It transports you to another local and you would have to fight - nothing terribly dangerous because if you died out there no one could rescue you - but nothing for major xp/gp gain either.
Just a suggestion..

Baldur's gate, of course!
The very reason I am here.
-
How am I going to stalk people in badger form if this is possible?
THINK OF THE BADGERS!

This was one of the reasons the portal system was changed apart from the badgers….
