Lagging so badly these days…
-
i have no idea exactly why but i my computer seems to lag really badly where it never used to.
Any ideas?
my internet speed is good 3mbps, and the computer has never had problems running nwn previously.
Just looking for something i can fix to help make me able to play…
This evening the ruckus in guilded had me crash on loading twice and then was unplayable after when i did manage to get it to load.

Is it lag (spots where it takes time from your mouse click to move/do an action to when the character does it or the time it takes to type something in to when it comes up on screen) or is it computer performance (low frame rate, jittery screen, sudden stops like the game has frozen for a moment, time it takes to load areas)?
-
It's lag.
For example, my loading times are almost non-existent, but when I say something, it quite often (not always) takes a huge amount of time ( two seconds?) before it pops up. Or monsters appear to be standing still & suddenly port next to you. All the while the char appears to be ready for combat (combat pose&animation) so no bad framerate, nor game freezing.
-
for me my load times have gotten longer, but i also have had lag spikes of a minute at times when it is busy before the movement i have programed occurs, or even the text i have typed appears.
last night when i moved into central i loaded really slowly, made my way to kantheas which wasnt too bad, then on transitioning back to central the thing crashed. relogged and it took forever to reload and i was then jumping really badly, maybe able to do anything every 15 seconds or so. then i crashed again.
relogged and it seemed better, but i then had to go as RL intervened in the form of a small child…
if it is computer performance that is the issue, what can have changed? this is the same comp i have always used.

Have you installed or changed anything recently? New software, antivirus, do you have other performance issues?
-
Update sound drivers? Sound card drivers eat up CPU cycles and can cause slowdowns.
-
Scan for viruses lately? Malware can also affect performance.
Likely something changed that has affected NWN if it used to run normally. Run a full malware scan and defrag.

done and done. also have antivirus installed and checking regularly.
i have cleared my override folder as i did put something in there recently for coloured icons, seems a bit better but not as good as it used to be!
-
Im suddenly having horrible lag, but its effecting nwn and skype, oddly enough everything else is fine, even my torrents go fullspeed.
This has currently made nwn unplayable for me, I hope it goes away soon D:

Is he lag still persisting, guys?

We have done some major work on the servers, analysing the running of critical scripts, identified places where lag was occuring and made changes. All this was done on Saturday and Sunday.

i have gone through my entire hard drive by hand!
found some crap my son had downloaded and removed it, seems to have helped a lot. Also ran through Adelor's tips for improving performance and that might be contributing too.
the thing that i think was causing the main problem for me was a screensaver that my son downloaded which though quite cool in itself seemed to run when it wanted to in the background rather than only being active when the screen needed saving so to speak!
was a thing called breve.scr where there was a darwinian evolution of the 'creature' in the screen saver which was quite interesting, however it took 50%+ of the cpu when it kicked in and used four times as much memory as NWN.
suprising thing was that i only found it by accident…

I think my problems are on my end so I can't say much. Before it happened though I did notice server less lag than usual (I tend to notice server lag more than other players at most times because of my slow connection) but with my problems I'd need a longer time to see.
The easiest way I've found to test if its you, or the server lagging, is to simply type any text and see if it comes through immediatly or not. If you think the lag is server side, text will always send immiedatly no matter how bad the server lags (At least in my experience). If text lags, then the problem is at your end.
