Cracked Laptop Screen
-
Anyone got any advice on what to do with a cracked laptop screen? Its a big crack and I cant see anything really. Need a new screen I think, but who should I go to or can I do it myself? Really don't know a lot about this so would appreciate any advice!
Cheers!

They aren't hard to replace. You'll probably have to go to the manufacturer to get one though. I replaced the one in my dell m1730 in only a few minutes. Dell sent me the parts under warranty and offered a tech to do the job. I prefered to do it myself and they didn't seem to mind.
Who made your laptop?

E-Bay also has just screens for laptops… I have a toshiba and found mine there for $65 US... installing is easy.. Most manufacturers will send you instructions if you request them

If you d like to do it on your own or if your warranty wont cover it, I d buy a screen from e-bay as suggested and then either ask the company for instructions or just google the laptop model repair manual as its usually referred. Some popular models even have disassembling instructions on youtube.

Thanks very much for your responses guys! Really helps!
Will I need any special equipment to replace the screen myself or is it just a standard screwdriver?

I think the usual screwdriver should do the trick, or those screwdrivers used for very small screws like those for eyeglasses, easy to find even in an optics shop. I can't be sure though, some manufacturers like to use a weird screw shape here and there. The repair manual should mention what screwdriver you may need so start from finding that before buying anything.

I needed a small flat bladed screwdriver to pry up one plastic cover and a #2 phillips screwdriver for the screws. Make sure you disconnect the power and remove the battery before you begin your work, and try to discharge any static charge you may have built up. (Touch a door knob or something) A needle nose Pliers might help too for removing screws from the housing once you have them loose. I have no idea of your make and model of computer. If you can get that info and do a google search you may find some service information online that will help you. There were youtube vids for mine when I was researching. Good luck!
