Alignment confusion
-
Hey there wondering if I could get some advice.
Im currently playing a character name ZEPRA and Im not sure if I have chosen the right alignment for her.
She is basically a racist elf. In conversations she will regularly voice her opinions regarding the inferiority of other races. In the grand scheme of things she would not be too fussed about killing somebody, especially if they get in the way. She would also happily rob, beat up or betray people if needed without a second thought. The sort of if you are being chased by a gang of thugs she wouldnt hesitate to trip up her party member to help her escape sort of thing.
However this doesnt mean that she is a evil mass murder that goes around killing people randomly.
I made her chaotic evil but Im not sure if that properly fits her behaviour. Advise please.

You can be chaotic evil without having the desire to kill people for shits and giggles. If she's willing to do what it takes to get her shit done, regardless of moral consequences, chaotic fits.
If she has no respect for the feelings of others, or desires to see the world around her made better for any reason other than to make it more convenient for her, evil fits.

Both of your definitions fit evil for me. The first fits evil a bit more, actually. :)

This could be anything, from lawful to chaotic, but probably more of a neutral or evil, than a good

OK, now you are talking evil, and probably not lawful anymore. leaning towards chaotic, but still possibly neutral.

Same as before, but leaning more towards chaos. 1+1=2, so I'm going with a chaotic bent, and we already established evil
However this doesnt mean that she is a evil mass murder that goes around killing people randomly.
Meaningless. Chaotic Evil is not Chaotic crazy. Don't get them confused.

Good fit. Keep it.

I'd advise you to remove your character's name from your 1st post.

I'd advise you to just play your character as is and not worry about alignment, because what you do IG will determine what you will be anyways.
-
I've always hated alignment in DnD anyway. It's a big crutch that limits so much. I just play my character, not my alignment.
-
Thanks for the advice.

Alignment shifts like you behave IG; just like it happened to one of my characters. There are few non-DM chances that your alignment changes, but if a DM is around and notices your behavior, he/she might shift it to what you act like.

I agree, though mechanically its necessary for tons of spells to work correctly

This might be a little too late to be any use, but I just thought I'd chime in and see if anyone else agrees.
I think Ko-ri-us, has it right on except for one thing, Chaotic, to me, implies more than just selfish behavior, but also some kind of active resistance or resentment to control or authority. As others have pointed out, Chaotic does not mean Crazy, but it is the antithesis of Law. The actions you described might not be lawful, but it also seems like they're not motivated by anything other than self-interest. That alone seems Evil, but not necessarily Chaotic. In that light, I might personally go with Neutral Evil.

Agreed.

Worst case scenario you rp your alignment wrong and it'll be changed. No biggy, unless you're playing a paladin or a cleric.
