Doing Big things?
-
We hear this left and right, "Make interesting characters do big things"
I've always more or less played a shadowed character…just went with the flow since i never thought of myself a good roleplayer i just went along for the ride.
But i thought i ask this anyways, how does one "Do big things" For better or for worse. Especially when trying to earn dm attention by actions.
-
Its not "big things" it is just doing stuff that will get other players doing stuff with you.
This is a multiplayer game. If we consistently see you out with other players adventuring or plotting or holding contests or something else along these lines then the DMs are pleased because you're bringing entertainment value to other players.
Typically, we're most impressed when we notice that you're not even online, but people are still reacting to the things that you've done.

Shady characters can do great things together.
Organise the heist of the century, stealing all the crown jewels of the Queen of Arabel, hide them for a week, then put them back, uncaught.
Kill off a whole garrison without anybody sounding the alarm, all in one night. (there was a certain thieve's guild that even saved a city, by just slaughtering all the pirates, of course nobody knew who did it).
You could even manage an incredibly risky smuggling/kidnapping operation. Think of all the movies where thieves, murderers or kidnappers manage to pull of incredible stunts in decent sized groups with different professions (60 Seconds, Ocean's Twelve, The Great Escape, Vinci… running out of ideas here).
Nobody has to know you did it, but it's so much more fun if you drag people's noses around, leaving hints or managing things no single man could ever hope to organise. (Saw... being the prime example in my head).
Us Shady people just need to get together, and find something to do!

unless your in a clichk it doesn't matter what you do….I just play and pretend like DM's don't exist and there are only players to interact with
-
I just don't see how for example…for a route to say Immersia to Arabel or Eastway to Arabel me and 3 people rp bandits kill people who don't pay the toll and then scamper off after a few heist before the ca verily show up.
For example
-
I'm not really sure what your example is trying to get at Delanish, but playing bandits is a perfectly legitimate option as long as you follow the rules of PvP. Also, killing the people just because they don't pay the toll wouldn't be much fun, you're far better off to beat them down, take some gold and send them on their way. Bandits that FD/Full loot everyone they come across aren't going to bring much fun to the server.
-
I honestly never knew you could kill people in PVP honestly.
Unless you do an aoe spell and turn the NPC hostile on you
But even stealing 100g off a persons seems so wrong.
-
That's Evil for you. Not everybody can play it when faced with other PCs. It's easy to kill an NPC IC or to rob one, but it's hard to do the same to a PC. Perhaps it's that boundary people have to sometimes clear up when playing? Believe NPCs are "people" too. If you rob NPCs, then you should be able to rob PCs. Both parties might start begging you not to do it, both of them might try to fight you, but hey, imagine that there were no NPCs and everybody was a unique PC, would that stop bandits from appearing? Ofcourse not.

Didn't one of your characters resurrect a god?
Id call that a big thing.
This so called Clique doesnt exist in the way your suggesting.
There are some players that are better at getting people together than others, they tend to be better at motivating others, forming a group and creating intrigue and conflict within the server and as such the DMs are more likely to take notice. Its not just because its that player, its because the player is genuinely better at making interesting characters that draw others to them.
If im trying to further a plot for my character and am not getting the dm attention that i want i can almost guarantee that is because im not involving enough of the player base (either to aid your quest, or to try and thwart it). Getting enough players interested is the difficult part, once you have that getting DM attention is easy.
-
Other evil exist they hide well then…or are inactive.
I think i'm more of a Goodly type character type anyways..
-
I guess some people have a natural talent for attracting others into their plots and some dont. I understand where Delanish comes from, I consider myself a "Just enjoying the ride" RPer rather than the creator of the fun ride. Whenever I attempted to create such ride it failed miserably. And while failure can still be fun it was more like the ride died silently which really is no fun.
In all those years here I ve come to the conclusion that having your fun is the important part. Sometimes a DM might notice, and make it even better (usually when you least expect it).
As to making something big, if you have no fun and just try to make this big thing happen, there's no point in it. So I d say have fun. I m actually watching this thread myself in case someone reveals the holy grail of winning CoA.

Plus honestly, some people just have fun ideas and communicate well to the DMs.
They don't get into conspiracy theories that we're out to get them, they don't try to avoid us because we're 'mean'.
They are friendly and cool and when they say "hey, I have an interesting idea" we're much more inclined to help them out.
When things don't go their way, they laugh it off and say "well I tried, but I suspected that would blow up in my face" and we laugh too as DMs because yeah, they did try and it was a good effort.
Then once in awhile, their efforts succeed and people go "wow, they pulled off something awesome". They likely never noticed the 99 failures that came first either.
So, be consistent about trying to do stuff and be awesome cool.

What Moloch said sounds like life. Except, in real life, THEY -ARE- OUT TO GET ME!
