Technical problem I need help with
-
Hey all,
As we have many computer literate people on this server, most of which I think are probably more literate, than a relative pc caveman, like myself, I thought I would throw out a technical question, as I have been having some pc issues of late.
Basically while trying to download a retro game about a week ago (st version of dungeon master incidentally), I got infected with a nasty trojan which infected the majority of my system. I finally managed to nuke it with avast, but the price was, it deleted a lot of files. Now I have managed to piece together a lot, but I cannot work out for the life of me, why I can no longer attach files of any description on hotmail, which is a painful point, as I need to be able to do so, for work related reasons, (im a writer chasing publishers).
If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might be able to fix this rather unpleasent problem feel free to write them down here.
warm wishes

You torrented. You got burned.
Go to Control Panel.
Add and Remove Programs
Add/Remove Windows Components
Uncheck Internet Explorer. You might want to back up your Favorites and Bookmark folders before that, however.
Also, since you are a caveman, become an astronaut just by getting Mozilla Firefox

Hey there,
I have firefox installed, Ive never really liked explorer. This though doesnt make any difference to me on hotmail, as I cannot attach files. I have also installed a new version of Java and updated my graphics drivers as well, and thats made no difference. Any more suggestions would be helpful.

Sometimes when a virus gets in, it really does a number on your machine. The best way I know of to correct the issue requires a lot of work, but it should make your computer run faster and correct these issues you are having.
Back up your important data, reformat your PC and start over.
Sadly, it could be something in your registry that is messing with your machine. Those are rather hard to pin point. At the very least if you didn't want to do the tedious work of rebuilding your machine, I think you will need a professional to come in and look at the machine. Even tech savy folks like myself will have a hard time troubleshooting an issue like this.

I had a similar issue not very long ago. I got around it by using "system restore" and restoring my pc to an earlier point in time.
I'm on Win Vista atm but I'm sure all the systems have it.

Control Panel, then System & Maintenance then Backup & Restore and hopefully you will have a restore point available prior to your d/ling the virus that you can return to.
I'm not too pc savvy myself but hopefully that will help.
PS Dungeon Master was a great game.

Another possibility is using a Linux live CD in order to clean up your present installation.
Here's a useful step-by-step walk through:

Thanks to all for the help,
Ive nailed the problem with my hotmail. After spending some time googling the problem, ive established that some piece of junk called Silverlight was greying out my attachments, I have removed it and now my email attachments are fine.
Again though thanks all for your help, I will be reinstalling neverwinter shortly and checking some more files and should be back online soonish.

It's hilarious that (Microsoft's) Silverlight could cause problems with (Microsoft's) Hotmail.

Yeah aint it just. Its why I use firefox over internet explorer. Problem with monopolies or near monopolies, is that a lack of competition makes them lazy and less innovative and you end up with this kind of scenario.

I use internet exploder all the time. Also, never had issue with Silverlight, but I can pass off that tidbit of info to some Microsoft employees I know.

When Netflix switched over to Silverlight for "Watch it Now", I swear to God the number of problems I had viewing their movies increased tenfold. Constant freezing of the screen image as the task manager shows Silverlight taking up %100 of my system resources, whereas, before, I had no problems whatsoever with no difference in quality whatsoever.
Damn you microsoft! Daaaaamn you!
Incidentally, why the hell are you using hotmail? Go get gmail.

Whoo would you trust with your professional dealings: Google, whose business is to gather and sell data about you, more than Microsoft?
