Sharing Loot

So I've noticed often people get upset over loot (Though really, its should items!) and that often when dividing loot it can sometimes take FOREVER.
I sometimes honestly want to fall asleep the way loot can be handed out sometimes! On a OOC note, mostly we always try to make it fair and quick. What do you think is the fastest way to hand out loot? Heres what I think may be the fastest.
1. Standing in a line for the gold.
2. Listen to what the leaders/people are saying on how to divide it. (Yesterdays Grodd event for example, some people just did not listen on how it was to be divided)
3. DM's handing out the potions seperatly (I noticed this was done yesterday) or one person should divide all of it as quickly as possible. No rolling for it, just quick handing it all out - unless its a rare potion
4. I think standing over what loot you want (if theres enough loot), and then rolling for it if theres conflict for it is the best way, so long as everyone gets an item in that first round of choosing. I've found everyone rolling then choosing in order can take insanly long.
5. Remember its just loot, don't get upset unless its really being divided up unfairly.
This thread is to discuss the best ways of handing out/choosing loot from an OOC perspective, to give myself and others idea's of how it should or could get things moving faster in the future. Don't get me wrong, I love loot. Who doesn't! But it can sometimes takes so long, or be so conflicting that in the end you don't really want loot at all.

I actually like DM's dividing the important loot and extra consumables. It's tough on them, but most fair way of doing it. Dice is good for the collected stuff.
When leading a party, I usually divide the loot myself. If my character is a person who would take charge and lead, he will also reserve the right to decide who gets what. This also gives me the option of handing out some extra gold, potions and such for those who lost a lot or performed well. If I am not in rush, I will also discuss with the group about what kind of items would fit them the best.
Then again, what ever rocks the groups boat is fine with me.

If I hand out loot on my quests thats above consumables/gold, I will divide it myself to make sure those that have earned it get it. It also avoids the cluster fuck that loot division so often turns into.

Way to go, ULK! This is by far the best way. I much perfer my unique items to be given by an NPC. They seem to hold so much more value to my characters.
I Hate Dice, but standing over loot and rolling for that is better than rolling for everything which is so "Yawn" boring!
My preference is:
This would reduce much time wasting and a lot of grief over commonly used practices. However, it should be born in mind that no loot division is without pain somewhere along the lines, whether IC or OOC. Riches bring pain!

I'm all for this.

Definately my favourite way of sorting out loot, short of DM actually handing "important" items around personally.
As to getting upset about loot, I don't think this is something to brick away with "it's only loot". It means some people are feeling hard done by and a loud suggeston to take more effort to make things fair to some standard. Maybe they are just being greedy and selfish but i've not seen that be the case very often.
Making someone upset OOC by rushing through something they wanted to at least have a chance at getting is entirely not on in my book. Even if your necromancer and his bodyguard are going to take that tome no matter what anyone else says, then play it out ICly and don't just snatch it up. Give people a chance to react and let them see that your character is a greedy bastard and not you as a player. If they are upset, hold a grudge against your character, try to steal back the item somehow then that's fine and IC, and even sparking conflict which is hopefully beyond ganking someone for loot. If you don't show greed and anti-social behavior ICly then it's going to come off as a trait of you as a player. My point from all that being: if people are getting upset over something - loot or otherwise - it's not for them to brick themselves up and just carry on as if nothing's happened; it's the responsibility of those they are upset at to make sure that they have channeled any ill feelings ICly, or else really given everyone a chance at least to get something they wanted.

I'm all for this.
Me too!
For other non-unique items, the characters stand over their item of choice Those items not in conflict are picked up by the respective character. Those items in conflict are rolled for.
I'd prefer it if people stand next to the things they want. I've experienced divisions where some ask who wants what, then people who are too loot-horny just ignore what other players say and just go "I want that.", wait and then take it before leaving while ignoring any protests. I also see people standing over items they want to "hide" them from others so we can't examine it, effectively eliminating the ability of others to claim said item.
My best experience is putting out things in a nice and ordered system (not just a giant pile) where things are divvied by category, then people can go to the item they want and state their wish for claiming said item, the roll for it. There is a lot of OOC-respect needed here, despite how much you want that epic shield with elemental DR or whatever, others likely do to, so by standing next to it and stating your claim, also waiting for others to get a chance to look over all items and give their shot. Its ok to be an asshole character, but not an asshole player.

I have not usually had a problem about loot on quests I have "lead". Problems develop when someone does not take a strong hand as to loot. If whoever is in charge announces how it will be divided, it usually goes smoothly. Assuming things will just work usually ends poorly. The key is to threaten violence to anyone who does not follow the rules, then follow up with said thread of violence.
I usually go for the "tell us what you want, if no one else wants it, take it, then roll for the rest" method. I put the "good" loot in one general group, then the rest away from it.

Shouldn't loot division be handled sort of in-character like?
Humble knights waiting to be gifted an item, wild gargossians clambering for the bigger sword, sneaky thieves pilfering an item or two when no ones looking…
There's already several established practices on the server, and sometimes the interaction between players concerning loot can be a great RP session

This happened last night. Honestly it seemed most people were taking it OOC to me (Just my opinion) and trying to say it ICly. Yes. There are going to be Characters who are greedy and those who are conservative. I played both. So I agree with this but there should be some OOCness to it so we don't get the people hording loot.

With loot you need to balance it between IC and OC. No one wants to wait around forever, we all live in different timezones too (At the end of the Grodd event - 6am for me ). Small groups are easier to handle, but larger groups can become a pain.
I once watched/part of a group that took nearly an hour and half to divide loot, and while RP -might- be great, there is better things to do than to discuss loot and not everyone can wait around.

I feel this was somewhat pointed at us. Just for the record, yes, we did pick up lots of stuff, but we waited for everyone to get an item each that they wanted and did not pick up anything of the more powerful items (except the one item for ourselves!). When most people had left we just cleaned the table cuz thats what greedy merchants do! And if your character disagrees with it, they are free to voice their opinions and protests! (Nobody did) We did take things very slowly and obviously after all.
-
I know Smurf, I didn't have a problem. I was more saying (From experience with all quests) OOC tends to poke into IC when it comes to loot when it should be they are balanced.
-
The gold, I usually just hand out equally.
If my character's the party leader and collector, I hand out potions and consumables to whom they'll be most useful.
If there's any items of note, I tend to give people three options.
1: Roll for it.
2: Bid for it.
3: Fight for it.Rolling is always the most boring and not really "fair" at all, I think, but people seem hooked on it so I still give the option.

Its hard to sort things out when everyone is talking at once. Im guessing you wouldn't have been ignored otherwise cause theres a good chance it was simply not seen at all. Coupled with the fact that everyone probably was tired (it was a 5 hour event I think!?) and it was late for some people (6am for me!) you can't really expect a lot of roleplay to come outa it.
I know I was far too tired to even concentrate, I don't know about the rest. Its times like that where you want to sort it out quickly and log off since it was such a long event.
-
I usually think whoever organized the quest should just get to decide.

There was loot? I was so tired I just took my gold and left.

This was told beforehand to the PD who organised the quest, I personally don't think the loot distribution was so bad yesterday. I have seen much worse and I saw the players who were looted up standing back and letting people who had nothing take something nice first.
