Death
The 'death' of Tymora, was the first of the amazing experiences I had during my adventuring career, and quite possibly the beginning of my personal destiny.
The city, having begun to become almost used to the patches of blotchy swirling darkness that lay about the city, was quiet, passive, it was a cold night, but much seemed as it had for several moons.
I was sat at a table in the adventurers guild, with my two loyal men, Harvey and Dathe, when we heard something over the cities magical sending system. This is normal event, adventurers constantly use this to call out all sorts of things, but this one, this was something else. The Queen of Arabel herself, Lhal, was making a city wide broadcast, about the chosen of Tymora, Darmos. Once the baron of Arabel, who had been missing for months, perhaps years.
Her call was to tell the people of the city, that he was to be considered fugitive. Enemy of the State. Criminal most wanted. She called out that no one should aid him, and if he was seen, he was to be captured.
I myself, was a Tymoran then, as was Harvey, and this magical message confounded us. Were we to abide by the word of our queen, and deny our religious sensibilities? This question was swiftly answered by the response of the Tymoran church.
The high priest of the time, made a call for all to deny the queens order, to aid Darmos in any way they could, that he was on a holy quest, and nearing its completion. We headed for the temple of Tymora, and found something beyond the stretch of our imaginations.
A gigantic, machine, for want of a better word, was set in the centre of the temple, with priest gathered around it in prayer, and the high priest standing before it speaking to the gathered. Suddenly a burst of purple light shot from the center of the machine, and up to the ceiling, we later learned it did not stop there, but continued into the heavens. shortly after that, black swirling lines of some form of energy alien to us, began spinning around the beam of purple, and the priest began becoming excited.
He told us that 'Darmos is doing it! He's entered the Rift!'
The priest began to explain, enthusiastically, that Darmos was entering this rift, in order to destroy 'the abomination' Besheba herself!
We looked at each other in disbelief for a time, and the priest called for all faithful to join him in prayer. There was little time for it though, as in a few moments, shadows began swirling from the machine, the temple was plunged into utter darkness, patches of light still ebbed about the rooms, and within them we could see the most terrifying monsters imaginable, lurching around, cruelly hacking at priests and common folk alike.
Anyone with a weapon began fighting the beasts, but they were in their element, and at great advantage in the darkness that swirled about us. We were pushed out of the temple, and into the streets, where, to our horror, the beasts were pouring from other patches of thick inky black pools of the dark.
It became apparent the entire city was under siege by these, things of pure evil and hatred. The battle raged through the streets, a gigantic monster, emerged from the mages guild tower, but this one, was different, looking like it was built rather than born, and built from demons at that, it began tearing the rift beasts limb from limb! it was on our side!
Even with the mages guilds powerful creation, the battle was not going our way. The fiends were seemingly infinite. After a battle that seemed to last for days, we were pushed back towards the Tymoran temple. A great flash of light shot down from the skies as we entered the temple, and a silvery haired maiden stood within, hacking down hundreds of beasts in single strokes of her glowing white blade. The maiden told us she needed us to get her to the point Darmos had used to enter the rift, that it was near a garden, deep in the ruins beneath the city, that we had no time to think or talk, simply act.
A group of adventurers was formed to head downwards, beneath the city, through the sewers, and into the ruins below. We fought hundreds, perhaps thousands of the creatures on the way down, as well as some more we had not seen to this point. Winged beasts, the size of a horse, men seemingly created of rot and gloop, and a gigantic demon like creature, as big as three men put together.
Eventually, we reached the garden, and jumped through a shaft of red light. We entered a narrow section of the ruins, and after hacking our way through the last defenders of this place, found what the maiden had asked for.
Glowing purple lights swirld about, a symbol of unknown origin on the ground, with a small spot of what I can only describe as, pure nothingness, and empty hole in the world lay before us.
The maiden revealed herself, as Tymora, the lady of luck. And told us she had come here, to fix the folly or mortal men. She told us that Darmos had made a grave error, and that only her own sacrifice could save the world and all existence from this terrible mistake.
Before she stepped into the rift, she smiled, and said 'Let none forget what has happened here today. This can never be allowed to happen again. It is not up to me, what comes after me, fortune favours the bold, remember that.'
And with that, Tymora, lady of luck, stepped into the rift, sealing it shut behind her
Re birth
Just when I thought my life could not become more amazing. When I felt my destiny was already at it's peak, after having fought side by side with a god, and witnessing her death, I was now to witness the re-birth?
My mind was shattered at the concept when Lord Kalindor told me what we were to do. He spoke of a dangerous trek into the stormhorn mountains, where the groups faith was tested, their own willingness to sacrifice everything for their belief. Several of them were felled by vile beasts, fighting for one goal.
To find a sacred coin, told of by a strange seer.
She said this coin would lead to the re-birth of Tymora and the adventurers hearts were set to the task.
They returned, after having given their very lives, and being renewed by divine powers beyond mortal minds to comprehend, with the coin in the seers hands. Success! Or was it?
The seer had the coin, but, that was just the beginning. Now they had to take it to the place of Tymoras great sacrifice but what then? As Tymora said to me before we headed into the ruins when I fought with her, 'do not think, act' And so I told them the same words, and we did.
Into the ruins, many adventurers went, I standing by the side of the seer, as I had Tymora, guarding her person. Down we went, deep deep down into the depths from my memories of that terrible and glorious day. I guided them to the spot.
'A spider shaped room? no…not exactly...' The seer spoke, and I knew where she spoke of.
We climbed deeper, into the pit, into the maw of the world, where the last taint of Lyss still left its mark.
A platform, with eight ridges, like legs of a spider, atop it, swirling colours, mists, and utter black. the same inky blackness into which Tymora had thrown herself.
The seer stood and held the coin aloft in the darkness. Vile creatures, cultists made of ooze, skeletons with rotting globs working their bones like puppets, all were slain, and then, a gigantic spider, blood and green sickly puss oozing from its orifices.
Down it went, while the seer spoke words unknown to me. and suddenly, without warning, she thrust herself away from my side!
She dived deep into the chasm beside the platform, I could only look on in fear and awe.
Lights flashed, sounds clanged, a feeling of hope filled us all, and then, an angel! an angel with wings shot from where the seer had fallen. It landed on the edge, spoke not a word, flew into the air, and smote the darkness with divine power, golden red lights flashed, blinding us, and when our vision returned, the darkness was gone, and so was the angel.
We looked about, befuddled, confused.
Rain? no. OW! a coin! coins rained from above. coins with a head on both sides. One of joy, one with a frown.
The adventurers rejoiced, and headed to the temple of Tymora to display the evidence of the rebirth, and their faces lit.
She was back, but not Tymora. Tyche, a new god, or perhaps an old one?
