Hey there,
See if you can join #coa and #coacharacters in IRC as well, to get concept advice from the players and the DMs.

Gettin into one of the non-appable factions is a great start like you have. Gives you people who'll look out for you and help ya out. And once you're comfortable with the server you can branch out abit more in your playstyle. Good luck.

B-Rock's right. I started out just playing random characters to get a feel of what factions are out there and what I could apply for. The player resource forum also works well to figure out a concept for yourself. Plus, the DMs will help you out if you are interested in joining a faction or apply for a subrace, or even a unique concept.
Don't worry, they don't bite. Hard.

There's nothing in the way for a new player to make up a solid concept at once and start off with that. This is usually only done by experienced roleplayers, but there's always new people who pop in and surprise me. My advice would be to not be afraid of making an actual concept right off the bat and then try to fly with it. Find out about the world you have entered and join anything you feel is worthwhile.
Personally I don't get much out of playing 10 odd random characters with little in terms of goals or concepts and the only things I learn from this is where the lv 1-4 quests are located. Try to come up with something you find interesting. Don't worry much about it "fitting the server". If everything was made to "fit" this place, then we'd all end up playing the same bland things. Doesn't need to be anything special at once. Even quite average characters can turn out to be great once they get time to develop.
