Brew Potion – Why bother?
-
Recently I decided to make a cleric of a goodly god. Among my plans was to help fund the church by selling potions of healing at market and using part of the profits to stuff the donation box.
Problem is, I find out that you really can't make any money brewing healing potions (at least not CLW potions). The cost to brew a CLW potion is 20 gold. The cost of an empty bottle is 1 gold. CLW potions are sold at 22 gold in NPC run stores, thus the maximum amount of profit I could possibly get through selling potions is 1 stinking gold piece, and that's assuming that I manage to convince PCs to buy from me at exactly the same rate as one can find in stores. Thus, there is zero incentive to buy from me.
I can't help but feel as though I picked up a useless feat. With the exception of hard to find wizard spells in potion form (for example, ghostly visage, or what have you. Which for the most part I can't cast, and fit in less well with my character and church) PCs have no incentive to brew potions, and potions have little or no profit potential.
I think that's a problem, and I can't help but wonder why the NPCs are selling them.

This subject comes up a lot. In recent days I just brew potions for myself now because it is cheaper than what NPCs sell them for. I mean, one or two gold cheaper isn't much but it is none the less cheaper. I wouldn't say it is a wasted feat, especially if it is rp relevant. I wish it was slightly cheaper to make certain potions but that is just my wishful thinking.
Also, the market for potions seems weak on the player side. I haven't brewed anything for anyone save Wabzy >.>

Give me some time to finish implementing all the recipes. The system isn't completely finished yet. You can find recipes for cure light wounds that will be cheaper than 20 gold plus the cost of a bottle when it is all said and done.

Mr Moloch has all the bases covered all the time. I don't know why common players even worry. I even put his name in on the deity field sometimes.

…What are his domains?
And, seriously, glad to hear it. I'd never really had a crafting character up until now, so I wasn't sure how much, or even if, potion crafting had changed. Having different costs for different recipes for the same potion actually sounds like a great idea, but will the cost eventually be ascertainable from the recipe description? That'd be nice. If I'd known that this particular recipe would allow me to craft potions for only 2 gold less than they cost in the shop I probably wouldn't have paid 70 gold for it.
You could even list ingredients.
IE:
CLW Potion
Eye of Newt: 7 Gold
Sweat of a Bugbear: 3 Gold
Moose Extract: 4 GoldTotal Cost: 14 Gold.

Just keep them secret once you have the recipe or none will buy a single flask!

The base cost is going to be something like 20-30 gold per level. Items that give lower costs will have it noted in the description. Some recipes will let you brew more powerful potions than others too.

All this said: I haven't seen a single recipe drop in any quest since November. And I've been questing and exploring a lot. Will recipe drops (albeit rare) be implemented again? Or have I just had incredibly poor luck?

Read my first post.
The one that basically says, 'this was never fully implemented and I'm adding recipes to the system right now."
