When designing a new character…
-
… how do you go about choosing your stats?
-
Recommended, then change it around so I'm not min-maxing. (Like take some off CON and put it in INT, for instance.)

I create the character concept without considering the mechanical Class.
Then I pick a Class.
The stats are based off of what makes sense, related to the character's traits.

Back in the days of min/maxing, id do whatever made me the biggest and most badass guy about.
Now! However!
Ill describe how i did this time around, as it actually made sense for me. That said, I do not imagine the char will survive.
First, i read through my concept writings. Try to get a feel of the char i am making. Once i feel i know this char, then i get started.
What is the most important stat Olouth, i ask myself. With this char, it was charisma. Next question, what is the absolute minimum you see this char having in this stat? I said… 14.
Then i pump it up to 14.
Then i say, whats next. For my char, id say i want him to be somewhat capable in hand to hand combat, so i choose, 14 strength.
Now we have 14 8 8 8 8 14.
Whats next? Is this guy clever? Yes. How clever?
Then i throw in, 13 for starters. 14 8 8 13 8 14
This guy is a warrior, so 12 min for con = 14 8 12 13 8 14
Is my guy that idiotic that he needs a 8 wis? Nah, doesnt fit the concept.
14 8 12 13 10 14Once this has been done, I look at the remaining points, and think, what needs more.
This way, i get the essentials at the lvls i want them, and i then try and distribute the rest to make the most sense.

I do what RageofImpule and Imleavin said
-
Depends on what sort of character I am making.
Sometimes I roll a die to decide, sometimes I do it to fit the characters traits.
-
6 cha, 8 wis, 13 int, 18 str obviously.
-
I make sure I have good charisma, at least decent inteligence, and lately at least decent wisdom, then I hope I have some left over for strength and dex. Constitution is religiously a dump stat for me. The reason being dumb non-charismatic characters with no wisdom don't interest me to play from an rp standpoint, although it might be a challenge I take on some day.
-
I don't care as long as I get to see bolthor floored out at least once every character he has to some of my doing.
P.S.: LOL DEADLY NEGATIVE TRAPS WOLOLOLOLOLOL
-
I differ from LaF a bit. I enjoy low charisma characters a lot, but usually have it somewhere in the positive. Wisdom is the all important stat for my characters generally. Survivability is in wisdom, intelligence is give or take. Leave it to people who crunch the numbers, it won't help much in every situations.

They can be quite fun.
For instance, the high-wis low-charisma person who others have somehow shoved into a faction leadership position. Can be quite fun playing out the complete hesitancy, not-sure how to get people to do things, always having to ask people if what you plan is okay. (well, low being a 10 in my example, not abysmal, but certainly not what you expect in a major faction leader)
