Drugs and CoA

Its been our policy to not interject into our game world things that will literally trigger anxiety and pain (rape/graphic torture) or trigger relapse into addictive behaviors, particularly in regards to drugs.
-
Thanatol please.
I really really need it.
For a friend...
-
I don't really see any issues with it. I don't see any reason to disallow any type of content that impacts ones own character soley.
-
Absolutely not. “Magical” things that are completely unrealistic like bloodstones, bleakatones, and parasites should be sufficient to represent contraband of that sort.
I completely agreed with Moloch about other things like rape, graphic torture and would add IC suicide, child abuse, cybor or basically anything else that is just appalling and heartbreaking, has no place in any game that I’ll play. I’d shift to OOC shutting it down and calling it out faster than @CitizenBane could FD one of my characters.
Tl;dr. No thank you please. Let’s keep it “friendly”
-
I don't see how it would really add anything to the game, but i am also of the opinion to let people play what they want... so.... if people want it they should have the option.
-
@citizenbane That's pretty much it yeah. It doesn't add anything to the game -for us-, but if it does for someone else, and considering it doesn't take away from us to let them have it, I don't see why people can't do it.
-
I have played many lunatic junky murderhobo PC's over on EFU back in the day and it was a sublime experience. I can't really bring myself to do it if the addiction isn't mechanical.
We have ale, and as a former alcoholic I don't feel any pressure to go binge drinking because its in the game. I keep a bottle of vodka on my desk, sure but don't look at that.
-
Thing is MrGeek bloodstones and bleakstones are so evil even most evil people would think twice about using them since they are destroying someone's soul most likely.

What I have been in a house fire and I am scared of fire, do we not want to have fireballs in game?
I'm all for it, bring it on.

I'll tell you what. Spend a few evenings or weeks volunteering at a mental health clinic helping rape victims and drug addicts deal with their mental health issues. Then come back and tell me how you, as a privilaged mentally sound individual without these struggles, still does not have enough sympathy and compassion for folks who do to want to make CoA a welcoming space for them.
Go ahead! I'll wait.

I just want to be a wizard :(
We have Bloodstones where the souls of innocent people are ripped out of them to fuel some evil guys magical, nefarious desires.
We've had people going around digging up the dead bodies of loved ones and re-animating them as undead.
It's a computer game, people need to chill out more is all >_>
-
@mr-moloch Going to add here; we've already helped people roleplay things similar to this with squiggles (which come with draw backs that are alleviated by buying more squiggles; representing a magical kind of addiction), we've added in bloodstone smuggling for people who want to do 'drug dealers', and we've always been pretty tolerant of how you roleplay violence provided no one 'pushes roleplay' onto someone who objects (and made it clear if things are too graphic, you're free to log out and get a DM to mediate).
So I'm not sure why people are still demanding more of this kind of stuff. I'm all for heavy BDSM, drug abuse, and non-consensual behavior in my roleplay. I roleplay this in small groups where I know all the members and people and how they'll react. I'm, as a DM here, really not comfortable letting my 10 year old daughter play this game with me if people on here want to do more of that though. There is a time and place my friends!

The basis of fantasy is to escape from reality. Some fantasy is all about cathedrals and sparkling skies where nothing is wrong.
Sometimes fantasy is a look into another world and how they cope with problems with addiction with the added element of magic and dwarves and elves.
The traumatized victims of murders, bombs, war- etcetera...also all exist. Are those people any less worthy of our sympathy and compassion when we play a game based off of killing things for pixels? My grandfather was a soldier in World War 2, and when he visited, we didn't play Call of Duty out of respect of his experiences. So I definitely see and consider where Mr.Moloch is coming from when he says that those who experienced drug-addiction might have a very different view on introducing elements of hardcore addiction into the server- and it might be seen as a glorification of crime life to younger kids who lack the maturity and perspective to see it for what it actually is- a disease that needs to be treated and the victims of it loved and not blamed for the decisions they made that led to the current state of their affairs.
However, I argue that as a fantasy server, we detach ourselves from the 'reality' and the immediate impact in order to tell a story. Right now, Bloodstones, Infernal Stones, Fairy's in a Bottle- all of these are terribly evil things! Whereas in reality, we have things like painkillers which were originally intended to help people that had unintended side-effects to becoming a pandemic in America at the very least.
Though, Forgotten Realms morality and RL morality are two very different things and we shouldn't try and compare apples and oranges.
I'd argue that CoA should try and portray a realistic world with its paragons, and its lows- such as the drug-addict on the street.
-
there are mushrooms, can we just leave it at that? Keeps anyone from being triggered.
Even if drugs were added, what would it bring to the server? It would just be another contraband thing for people to not use.
-
If we ever have to add red flags in our description, we've gone too far. I don't think drugs are not needed. We have plenty of drug allegories as is.
