Discord Survival Guide
-
Since we're making such a migration to Discord, I figured I'd better put up a quick list of stuff on how to navigate it, for those unfamiliar.
Step 1: Connect to the Discord!
Invite Link: https://discord.gg/QsDx8Vd
Step 2: Choosing a name. It's pretty straightforward. However, unlike IRC, things work differently. On IRC, each nick its its own, vs say Skype or Steam where you have a base ID and a Display ID.
For example, let's say you have base ID of JimBob and your Display ID is The Dude. You'll be shown as The Dude in any servers you have your nick set as there.
Keep in mind your base ID is what you login with, not your display ID. Changing nicks on Discord works same as IRC.
Step 3: Configuring Discord.
You can disable notification pings from @everyone and @here easily by rightclicking the server icon -> Notification Settings -> Suppress @everyone and @here. Also change the All Messages to -> @mentions.
The next step you can do is by configuring your personal discord look.
You do this by going to settings (accessed via clicking the cog near the bottom of the screen next to your user ID) -> Appearance. You can choose between light/dark theme and giving it a compact view making it look like IRC.
After that, next step is customizing links. This is especially useful if you're receiving NSFW links and need protection. Under the same path you took to get to changing the theme color, you simply go to Text and Images instead. Disable preview info and you're good!
That's the quick list, any questions? Ask away!
Having problems connecting, like below? Solution added!

I got as far as clicking the button at the top of the forums, didn't work.
Also tried the link on IRC, didn't work.

You need to install the desktop client or log in online first. If you're not logged in clicking that link just takes you to log in to discord.
Once you're logged in, click on one of the + signs on the top left and it will ask you for a url. Paste the invite url into there.

Note: The IRC channel still exists, but DMs mostly stick with discord these days for 1) Persistent chat, we never lose any of our discussions and 2) smartphone app.
The IRC channel will probably always be around, but we'd strongly encourage a move to discord, because I personally cannot give up persistent chat and file / screenshot auto transfers.
At the very least, hang out in both, so you can contact us (or me, at the least). I travel a lot, so I'm mostly on my phone and not a PC.

You're the best. Should probably have that at the top of the guide so super dumb people like me can get involved!

@solarfall Donezo.

Just FYI I clean out the dupe accounts and assigned roles to the ones I saw actually being used. If you login and find yourself removed from the server, 100% that is why. You were not kicked or banned for breaking rules or being inactive, I just got the wrong account.

I'll see about adding this to the handbook

Bumping this, people don't seem to be aware you can disable @everyone and @here pings from showing up for you. Instructions are in the first post.

it keeps telling me the email is already registered when i try to claim the name, it will not even let me download the app, as it jumps to the email window, which it says is already registered, i can watch the conversation in discord, but am unable to talk
