Making a Custom Portrait
-
So here's a quick guide to making a custom portrait in NWN. Unless you make them available to all for download, they will just see something like this. Also applicable if you wipe your portraits directory and don't redownload it.
What I strongly recommend is you take an existing portrait (typically gained from a portrait pack!) as a guideline.
This guide assumes you've got your 5 prepared images (T, S, M, L, H).
What you want to do is take your image, and resize it (I did mine in the past in Paintshop Pro) until it better fits the image. But before you do that, look at the base image and notice it has a white block section. Make sure you leave that block in when you make your portrait, as it needs to be blank to properly work in NWN since as shown with the linked image, it's where your HP and AC go.
Once you've made your portrait by resizing and leaving the white field on it, it should look like this:
When you put your portraits together, the filename must be the same with different extensions. IE it must be GenericH.tga, GenericL.tga, etc.
As far as I know, portrait formats must all be in .tga format.

@http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Portrait:
The five .tga files can be generated by Neverwinter Nights from a single image in jpeg format (usually indicated by the file name extension .jpg). This is done as follows.
-
Place the jpeg file (e.g. my_pic.jpg) in the portraits subdirectory of where Neverwinter Nights is installed (typically C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\portraits).
-
Start Neverwinter Nights, then start (or load) a game.
-
Enter the console command ConvertPortrait followed by the name of the image without the extension (e.g. ConvertPortrait my_pic).
-
Find the .tga files in the portraits subdirectory, zip them up into a single archive file, and share it with the community.

We can do that? That's totally new to me, I always made them by hand.

You're welcome, my dear.

That one is new to me too! Thank you Echo

absolute zero was slightly more expansive about how to make them.
@AbsoluteZero:Hi, I couldn't find any threads anywhere that explained this so I figured I'd make one.
I saw the Custom portraits thread and couldn't help but notice that everyone was doing it the hard way.
So I figured I'd start a new portrait thread with a quick and easy way to add portraits to your NWN from within the game itself!Here goes: You can essencially add someone's portrait to nwn or make your own by simply dragging the jpeg of that portrait into your portaits folder… Then when in game you just type a simple command with the name of that portrait in it, and boom done. You can from then on see that persons portrait, or use it yourself if you want.
@Step:
1: Place a .JPG into your "/portraits/" directory where you installed NWN (Usualy its "C:\NeverwinterNights\portraits"). If there isn't a folder called portraits, create one.
2: Hop on NwN and get in game, doesn't matter if its offline or online.
3: Start the console (that yellow > text in the top left of your screen) by hitting the tilde key "~" (which is usualy in the upper left hand corner of your keyboard)
4: Type "Conv" and then hit the Tab key which will auto complete the command "ConvertPortrait" for you… or you could just write the whole thing yourself (remember, commands are CaSe SeNsItIvE)
5: Add to that the name of your image. For example "Lumomancer", don't add the .jpg extension to the text, it should end up looking something like (> ConvertPortrait Lumomancer).
6: This automaticaly turns the portrait into all the different sized files needed for nwn and automaticaly adds them to your game. Note that you won't see the changes until you log off then back on.
Note that the Jpeg image has to be of the right size in order to be a portrait, you can easily set that up with any draw tool. It has to be roughly 256 pixels wide by 512 pixels high, the game takes care of the rest.
Try using my characters portrait to see if you've got the trick :D
Enjoy!
