Area Ideas
-
Folks, I'm working on building a new area for the module, it is a river gorge that runs along the side of an abandoned village. The area was once populated by several wizards whose ruined towers are still visible along the skyline. At the summit of the gorge is an entrance to an infamous dungeon.
That said, I want to add some unique bits of flavor, history, potential story/plot/quests to the area. What may motivate you to go look/explore here? What do you as a player hope to find in an area when you go through it?
-
Assuming it's not going to be an inherently dangerous area, (Aside from the Dungeon), I'd love to see some ambient text and readables, perhaps abandoned wizard experiments.
-
Magical anomalies, maybe? Something that could be either a passive hindrance/benefit, that just sort of wanders around and is ill-understood, but potentially something to be studied/harvested?
-
Magical anomalies, yes. Not sure if it is possible, but something like time moving irregularly (at times, spell effects last longer than usual, at times, shorter than usual. Not Wild Magic though - for no apparent reason, it seems most mages hate wild magic..? Even though it doesn't seem to be -that- common for it to disturb spells, and the effects never seem to be -that- bad.
Ooh! Spells going off randomly! Mostly small negative/buff spells just… appearing, both on PC's and NPC's, so that you or the Dire Wolf you are fighting, may suddenly get buffed by barkskin, or cursed with blindness/deafness.
Abandoned wizard documents, yes, for example, on spell alterations - But making these random, so that every time you come there, there's a chance you learn something new, instead of finding the same "Bless plus Corpse makes Invincibility spell!" each time. Not necessarily even a new spell alteration each time, but generally just a randomized text from several possibilities. I'm sure several players could help writing these up, if there's a sensible method of randomizing the info. Preferrably so that the info changes -per reset-, not per character per reset.

A dragon!

A dragon!
This! And no more lost scripts.
But I rarely see random dungeons being done much nowadays. Clar Banda, Pyramid, Lair, Halls all seem pretty rarely visited either because of difficulty or low reward. I'm probably wrong though, just the observations from my timezone.

The area is a river gorge. I'm not looking for ideas about the wizard towers. I've got ideas there.
-
random objects found on the river banks (ie think gold rush style)

Elven glade
Water mill
Farms
Fishing spots
Ancient Battlefield
Fortified Homestead
Goblin raiding village
Werewolf den
Old Ritual Site -

Well, I managed to accidentally cast circle of death once.

I know, I for one liked the Lair of Temptation but the randomness of it meant you could legitimatly show up with a whole group ready to explore and then get 5 minutes in and have to leave due to only one area ever opening up. If you put any random dungeons in, please please please make the random areas at least big enough to be worth the trip.
However, I like to +1 the goblin raiding camp above. It would be a nice little place that could be very dangerous if gone to alone and perhaps a good place to hit up with a group when you want adventure without questing. Many of the dungeons around the server aren't being done anymore, which makes me sad, especially since many of their secrets did not get uncovered due to the frustration of visiting those places 20+ times and finding nothing.

I would like to see some more explorable locations. Like Damp caves but Higher levels

yeah, I confess the only high level quest I see sendings for anymore is the Dire Bear one. Makes me sad to know there are soooo many quests not being done. There are some still in the server I haven't done in years because it isn't one of the "main quest train quest" Such as the Winters quest, the 4-8 Stonelands quest, etc

For the love of trom, pls make an easier exit in the boardin' pirate quest instead of going all the way around the same way. There is literally no point to the last area of it and having a way out in that room might be good.

The gorge has a flooded region that has partially engulfed a settlement in the past, this was brought about by actions of an 'enemy' of the wizards and was done seekign to undermine their power and support in the region as direct attacks were not possible. So, something along the lines of a quest to combat the lizardfolk/shark riding water goblins/whatever that destroyed the village mentioned above.
An underground and partially submerged quest similarly to the helmlands crystals one would be a good addition to add to the theme of the area.
