this might help:

there is like a forum where you can post issues and people can help you with them sometimes too...
so it basically makes a log, and if you don't understand stuff, you can share the log, and people can help tell you what changes you should make, many of which that program can do.
i haven't used it in a long time. so i don't know what changes might have happened.
sometimes have a recovery/ clean boot disk will help too, because some malware disables your antimalware stuff once its active...
it might take a little bit to figure out hijack this but if you get these problems a bit it will probably save you money and time in the long run.. but you can also seriously mess up your system with it.
generally, you can use firefox type addons like noscript to block scripts on unknown sites, and allow them for sites you determine are safe, avoid opening programs you don't trust which have 'executable' type permissions, for instance .exe files... um you can run procmanager or something to like see system processes, and see if any of them look suspicious; there are sites which will tell you what processes belong to which programs, so you can know if it is something you opted in for, or something that snuck its way on your machine..
i think microsoft process monitor might be good enough/ the one you want...
sometimes it will let you force kill processes you don't like either...
there are probably some programs that will do some of this stuff automatically, including free ones...
so you don't have to like learn as much... but nothing comes to mind right now... i think like... um zonealarm firewall can come with an antivirus protection too... doh i don't know good antivirus stuff. well i'm sure there are a few techies around here... i bet latoksinned could give you some good advice...

you could make a linux boot cd, or have someone make one, then boot in linux, then have the linux boot scan the harddrive for malware… i bet there are linux versions designed specifically for this...
there is probably windows stuff for this too.

booting off a fresh disk might not work if you have a rootkit or malware in your firmware.
some companies build backdoors through their hardware too, etc… in fact, you might say most have some, but generally one hopes that only the nsa et al have the ability to access them, and that generally they don't care about what you are up to...
