If we were to move CoA to another game what would it be?
-
If CoA were to move to another game since NWN is aging what are some ideas for games that have engines and capablities to support what we want to do? Thoughts please
-
NWNs engine is still pretty good.
They managed to make The Witcher in it, and thats a lot prettier than standard NWN
-
I don't really see another viable option, but then I think of CoA less like a videogame and more as a table-top DnD substitute, so I don't really care if the game is not super pretty.
It conserves most of the mechanics and still looks better than cheap pogs and dry-erase markers on a plastic grid. I really think NWN is pretty good for what we use it for, especially with all the custom stuff folks have worked hard on.

Lol.
I'm pretty sure it was heavily modified to a point where it could be called a different engine all together, you wouldn't catch NWN servers running it.
You can't move the server to a different game, I think. The engine itself isn't the real cause of CoA woes, so moving to a different game would be disregarding your tried and true player-base in favour of newer players… who probably wouldn't appreciate the nuances of a PW server anyway.

I'd move it to an engine powered by dead impressionist painters. They'd paint the details my character looked at, superfast.

I agree this 100%.
+1.

I know NWN2 was super buggy when it came out but its gone a long way. Probably the only engine that could host a new CoA.
There used to be a server called Tales of Moonshae which I m not sure it still runs. It was made by CoA DMs if I m not mistaken and last time I tried it it run pretty well even though its been years. -
They have lower player count then us from what I've heard, but they are running. I couldn't find my CD keys I got a while before, so I couldn't try to log in. I'd loved to try it though.

Bugs appart, there was also the downloadable content that was mandatory to join any server that killed NWN2. Then again now pretty much most good servers need haks now on NWN, but the download size is still smaller. NWN2 content for a single server could be a few GBs as I recall. Good thing is the downloader is integrated in the game so you dont need any external tool, you click join and stuff begins to download.

I could dig NWN 2
-
Seems utterly pointless

NwN2 is pretty broken unless you get a gazillion haks enough to make it another game, nwn1 works much cleaner and better and we would not be able to have the same scale as Arabel in areas. Sure, it would be pretty, but the game play and mechanics, and well characters looks are too game breaking even with being a younger game than nwn2.

http://shadowbaneemulator.com/ When this goes live; it could be a possibility since guilds can build their own cities and whatnot. Free to play too. PrologueWoW is a private WoW RP server which is giving players the ability to tell stories similar to the DM client on NWN but I am not sure how many WoW fans we have here but it might be worth checking out
Further off in the future is Everquest Next but that won't be for awhile but it still has a lot of potential. -
Im not sure why you seem so intent on moving CoA to another game?
-
Pretty sure none of those options will have anything near the flexibility NWN does, for one simple fact.
It's a real shitty business model to make games that other people can create so much varied and edittable content, because then they dont need to buy anything from you for ten or more years. NWN has taught the games industry that. They might have some basic systems but nothing truly useful. It'll all be gimmick and a way to get you to pay for more content updates.

And that's pretty much why NWN-like games come out every 10 years (and even then they fail to catch up to expectations, yes NWN2 I m looking at you…)
Anyway the thread here seems of "phylosophical" nature more than a realistic one. Even if there was a similar platform noone would expect CoA actually transfered in its whole. At best we d have to start anew, and all the work that has been put in CoA already would have been pointless. Yeah perhaps the server will die at some point (its inevitable) but then again numbers seem steady to me the last few years...
