Bring back enchanting!
-
Me and my friends were out questing today. My party member offered me a sword to use, and to my great joy it was an adamantine sword! I thought "Wow, this is great! These things are super rare and powerful!" That is..until I realized a crappier in game material called "iron" could make a better one.
I'm not saying the crafting is bad, but I'm saying the crafting system has replaced enchanting, and should either be lowered in power, or special items should be boosted. In this age where things can be craft to be +1 AB and +1d4 damage, it's way better than say any random +1 weapon. +1 +1d4 damage weapons were practically the best of the best just a short V. ago, why has crafting a simple mundane iron element now become more powerful than a magically enchanted masterwork one?
Crafting is nice and all, but come on…something's gotta change about this. Why should my magical sword of great power(+1) that I quested and plotted for that spews out acid (+1d4) for be just as strong or even weaker than some dude who goes out and smiths iron ore and makes gloves? (+1 +1d4)
I may be over thinking this, and I don't doubt the DM's power to deliver upon advancing the server, but I don't see them offering a +2d4 or +1d8 magical item anytime soon.
Edit: I was thinking and thought it should be more along the lines of...
Occasio: Gives certain skill bonuses because it's made out of wood and lightweight. Common, cheap.
Bronze: Gives certain bonuses against certain creature types, or maybe skill bonuses. Common, cheap.
Iron: Gives slight damage bonuses or against creatures. Sort of common, average price.
Steel: Steel weapons always turn out as masterwork so they get a damage bonus, but may also be enchanted later into a +1 weapon. Uncommon, Expensive
Adamintine: Starts with a magical +1 enhancement bonus after crafted, may be enhanced to add +1d4 elemental damage to it. Quite expensive and rare.
Example: Adamintine longsword: +1AB, +1 damage. Ocassio wood club: +1 AB, +1d4 damage.
A magical tree that's plentiful should NOT be stronger than a somewhat magical/super rare and valuable metal alloy. >_>TL;DR: Should enchanting be brought back with crafting?

I like the new system a lot in honesty. The basic crafting is kinda of handy, but the higher stuff like silver is really awesome.. but pretty hard to get!

That's…. pretty much, exactly how it is.
Regards enchanting stuff after it being crafted. Well, no. Crafting is already magical crafting really. I don't entirely see the point of making it so you have to find an enchanter after having an item crafted, and adding in all the scripts and checks and methods to add enchanting to the system, especially when the player base is much smaller, finding a crafter, -then- an enchanter would just be too much.

What's the excuse for making super rare alloys like mitheril and adamintine weaker than freaking iron? I guess I'm just expressing how much of a let down it was to finally get my hands on such a material just to have it be crappier than a piece of wood. .-.
Not sure if it's been implemented or working, but I'd like to see such materials be even stronger than iron or steel, since they are in practically all regards, but I'm not sure how to suggest going about that without making them over powered except giving them the option to be magically enchanted or something.
I just want to find something special dangit..

The Adamintine sword isn't player crafted, once you can get one that is player crafted it will be more powerful than the one you have, I'm sure…
-
Yes, as mithril crafting is much better than iron.
-
Wait, iron isn't quite better then adamnite… adamnite gives you enchantment bonus.

True, but iron gives +2 damage while adamintine only gives +1, and since magic weapon is practically always available…
Well, supposedly player crafted items are better though, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
-
Mithril is so good the DMs wont let me put it in. There are items in game that just give +1 enhancement bonus yeah. You want me to go through an 11 year old server and balance absolutely every single item ever made, to fit with the new crafting system?
Sure, just pay me.
-
Mithril was basically impossible to create, no one would have made a weapon with the materials needed
Steel however is basically +1 enhance, except against racial types that really matter, but is not bad.

Guys I think we need to remember something here in regards to the server. Its WORK to change things. Not the fun this is an easy five minutes type of work. Its the Oh My God I Have to Do That. At least it was for me when I messed around with the Toolset, and that was on things MUCH smaller than CoA. Besides its a role-playing server and I personally think things are on it are pretty damn good. Dont worry about it so much. :)

Im pretty sure a few months back a bunch of us that were mining in the deepest parts of the underdark on a daily basis found a decent amount of mithril in our time. Not that I know how much it takes to make a sword, or even if there are recipes in game for them.

It wasn't so much worrying as it was "Oh! I finally found an adamintine sword! What a super cool drop!…oh wait, it sucks more than a normal iron longsword. Throws it away or something."
But as mentioned before, crafted items are apparently better, so I'm off to go search for adamintine ore and recipes.

You might need different weapons for different situations, which is cool in my book. A plain +1 weapon is boring, and just the flavour for the crafted ones are good. With a caster you can get your iron/bronze/silver/steel weapons enchanted. Your standard +1 weapon would not get any benefit unless the caster has GMW.
I've done a lot of crafting lately, yeah the standard equipment found on quests are not always so much to compare with, but the crafted ones are very situational. They are not so powerful in most situations, but they are awesome if you're fighting enemies they have strengths against. Besides, if player crafted items were weaker than everything else you'd find in the game nobody would care about crafting and all the effort the DMs put in would have been a waste.

Magic weapons are not always available.
My scimitar wielding fighter had used a mundene one in his off-hand throughout his career and he was my most successful character on CoA ever. In his main hand he used a unique DM-loot one. It had +1 acid damage, and had a badass name.
