How coa became dependent on haks
-
gents I thought coa's pride was it's independency from haks, now you need haks to log in, sounds familiar to something we discussed earlier that shouldn't happen. Just wish to hear your thoughts on this.

To me seems good enough.
NWN isn't getting any new players. Those who are new to it are friends to those who alredy play.
And those who play NWN will be used to download haks to check a server. Why not?
-
and you don't actually need the haks to log in. "Don't spread false information!" was my first thought when I saw the title.
-
The haks are fairly small as well.
Its not like huge bloated messes like the CEP.
-
We had this discussion previously and the majority was in favour of haks. They're not going away so probably no point in discussing it further.
-
And it looks -amazing-.
You can still log in without them. They're super easy to download thanks to the magical wonder that is the City of Arabel launcher.
I think you've just been misinformed.
-
I think the fact that there's no server list anymore makes a huge difference to the discussion. No one's going to casually hop in anymore without reading up on it a little bit. :)
-
As a new player or character (can't remember which!) you wont need the haks to start and be introduced to the server, which is good. But once you have set up the haks already, with every new update you will need to get the new haks before logging in. Which is fine if you ask me, it makes sure everyone is on the same page and that no risk of anyone being out of date with old characters.
So, yeah as most said there is no real point into this thread to be frank. This is now a soft hak server. That certainly wont change as, as far as I know, everyone loves the beauty the haks has brought into the server. So, I suggest for next time, that you take some time to research and look into the matter before writing a not very meaningful post if the answer is already in the FAQ about haks. :)

As someone totally new (well i played a little about 5 years ago) it took me under 10 mins to get sorted to play with all the Hacks enabled. I think COA looks all the better for it too.
As an aside, can anyone recommend other Haks to make it even better?
-
Haks are not mandatory. You can log in and play without them.
-
i was not able to log in without the haks, if someone was able to get in without any haks i would love to know how they managed it when i could not, on two separate occasions, but that being said, once i got the haks, things did look a lot better
but that is not important, the main reason haks are needed now is we have a closed community, with the demise of gamespy we will no longer get casual players coming in, it will only be by word of mouth now that we get new people, so may as well unleash the hak'y goodness, and it does make things look a lot nicer
-
If you dont have the haks though, many monsters will be invisible and not able to be targeted
-
You can log in without haks.
Once you have haks enabled on a PC, and we introduce a new hak, then that PC cannot be played until you download the new hak.
This is because we don't check for haks in "tiers". We just check if you have them or not. When you hit .sethak on, the haks no longer become "invisible", and you need to have them all before you can play.

You thought wrong.

Don't be rude now. He has a point. Before the great fall of server list hak-free servers were the king.
-
log in with haks, good
log in without haks, good
log in with only partly having haks, not good.nothing else I was frusturated that my updater wasn't working so…. It is all working i=fine now
-
Enjoy the new haks then, we've made some real nice stuff with them for you. Happy new year!

Returned yesterday after literally a year between this and last time I played. Fresh reinstall of NWN, logged right into the server, no problems, no HAKs at that point.
Then I came on the forums and found the autoupdater, installed that, got all the HAK content, works like a charm.
Don't see the problem, really. Connecting to the server without the server lists is now complex enough that even a complete newbie without a referral (yeah, those happen, right?) is going to come here first to read up on at least where to find the server.
