Computer bust, will be running nwn on an ultrabook
-
So my computer fried after a powercut and im going to be getting an ultrabook for uni in september so ill likely be out of game till september, even longer if i cant get nwn installed and running on whatever i get.
-
Should run.
Might need to get a copy off GOG as some laptops don't have a dvd drive.
Though you might be able to fix your current computer. Power cut is only likely to fry the power supply and thats fairly easy to fix in a desktop.
-
Power supply is fine as it switches on. After it boots up it goes to a black screen with the mouse pointer and nothing else and the keyboard shotcuts dont work. Might be something to do with chkdsk going through a 5 hour process of 'Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file 1461234'
If anyone knows about a simple fix for this error id be thankful. Im running on windows 7 and dont have a reinstall disk or anything. I have a feeling the hard drive or maybe even the motherboard might be wrecked though.

You can try to restore to a previous point in time, not much hope it will work, but at this point it won't hurt either. should be able to presh f8 on boot and get options for it.

My guess would be you've got some bad sectors on your hard drive because of the power cut which corrupted your windows installation. Happened to my old notebook as well.
All you need to do is boot from an installation disk and reinstall windows. Don't think there is simpler way to fix it. -
Problem is he doesn't have a reinstall dis for it, no original media. but I suspect your right Direfish, sounds like corruption on the disk.

did your hard drive survive? if it did, use one of those hard drive enclosures and then drag the nwn folder to your new computer, there is a chance the hard drive may be readable on another computer as a outside drive (I did not read that the hard drive was damaged)
do not give up on it, a computer savvy individual may be able to recover some of the files (I have some I rely on all the time, it is where I picked up the put your nwn folder on a usb key as a back up)
-
I'll need to look at the guts to see if i can get the hard disk out. Wish id thought of a backup for my nwn folder as everything else of any value is backed up. As current finances go it'll be some time before i can afford both a new hard drive and operating system software.

Know anybody in college? they can get OS software fairly cheap often times….just something to think about.
or, if your PC has the license sticker on it (with the code) just get a pirate copy of the software and use the legitmate code to make it legal.
-
the danger of pirated software is much of it comes with added malware preloaded, finding a used copy of a OS might be better, and use the Key on your computer to activate that. I know of one person who was able to do that after a malware forced rebuild (as with many computers now, they did not have any OS disks with the computer, the vendors now tell you it is up to you to make your own backups, and a reinstall from the hard disk is useless if the hard drive crashes or has been infected, as was the case in their example)

well im back in action so should be in game later on today!
