The point.. is having fun

well i have fun when i play in the city of arabel. ( not)

Having been killed by that same bedine shaman with that same spell, I share your pain!
I'm quite sure that I just respawned, grabbed my belongings (this was when everything still dropped from your inventory when you died) and logged out. It's no fun, but at times like that you've just got to put it down to it being a game; that the game world is imperfect and that something like this happens to everyone, usually several times to the same character - whether it's lagging to death, faction bugs, monsters lurking on transitions, a bullete attacking you before your AE kicks in because it's so massive…
Welcome to CoA! (though stonelands are unusually dangerous for this kind of thing at the moment while AI is being tweaked)
-
This mystic should either be fixed or the quest blocked off until he is.
-
Cargal, when you regain that level get ready to get a much worse roll for hp. :(
That's CoA's idea of fun. Does not appeal to majority of players, but veterans love it! -
I don't think that giving our new players such bad advice is helping anyone.

Cargal. I know it is a pain to die in the game. Yet if death is no longer feared, you will end up with a bland, meh, game like Diablo III, where dying is a 20 second setback, a mild annoyance. CoA has been build to be as much like pnp as possible. But since the last wipe was in January 2004, many things which we would like to change, cannot be, until we roll out V5. V3 and V4 is like an old castle. Its been rebuild, layer upon layer for almost 9 years. Thus, there is alot to change, but the only way to do some of the changes to the foundations, is to rebuild it from scratch, which is what we are doing.
Now, with all that no helping information aside, here is some proper advice. Dont travel alone, play it safe, and use your potions and spells wisely, but to not hoard them. Those tips will keep you alive, and help you from dying in general. Fear Death, and make certain your character respects death. The game will come much more alive that way. Because just like you, as a person, isnt an insane daredevil who doesnt care how far down you are, standing on the edge, so might your character not be.

the bedine mystic killed me too. maybe she should be tried for crimes against the citizenry of arabel. i dare the hoarites to go have at her :D

I'm a fairly new player myself. This thread is about new player's frustrations, so i thought i'd share mine. :)

O'louth, cease thy defence of the death system! Cargal was saying it sucks to die to a bug and not get DM-raised.
i do not mind dying because of rash action, bad decision on my part…
but dying from a glitch -

In policy, DMs are not supposed to resurrect people who die from bugs, and there's one main reason:
If we resurrect someone from a bug, then we start getting tells from people who would abuse this and say, "Hey, I died to an AI glitch!" when really it was just them being stupid and hoping to get a freebie.
Now, however, if I was watching over you and -saw- this bug go down, I would absolutely resurrect you. Because come on, that's just silly. DMs were players once too, and we know this frustrations. Also, remember that as much as we want to be, there's not always a DM online.
Hopefully this clears things up/lessens the sting just a small bit. Thank you for being polite, though.
And welcome to CoA!

I'm so excited to see a new player that I almost forgot what I was going to say!
…
...
... I'll start with welcome to the server!
I would encourage you to stick with it for a bit and try not to sweat the death system too much. Mechanics on this server are kind of harsh compared to some other video games. This place has evolved to an extreme difficulty level because so many of the players are long time veterans that have mastered game mechanics and the particulars of this game server. The difficulty has evolved with the veteran players so I see how it could be off-putting to a new person. If you work in with some of the old hands here they can teach you a lot about survival and methods to have fun. There are some -very- experienced role players in the crowd on CoA that are pure fun to interact with. They will help you with the learning curve here. I would also add that the dm team in my experience is a fair bunch for the most part. They'll do you right if they can. It's been a long time policy on this server to not return experience points or loot due to bugs. I completely understand why they have this rule. Bugs and death are frustrating, but I would just encourage you to stick with it.
I won't be in game too much till later this fall. If I wander into the game Ill keep my eyes peeled for you. The accounts I use are Senseitravis and Euphemystic.

So i expect some serious flame when I say this, especially since this might even sound hypocritical, but death happens even in the most annoying circumstances.
My Pyromancer took a stroll through the Kings forest the other day with a party of 3. Suddenly, out of frigging nowhere an Ahnkeg appeared and paralyzed me. Next attack killed me. There was nothing I could do to prevent it killing me. It wasn't a fun death, but the thing is, that death has made me respect the Ahnkeg massively for it's ability to sneak and kill me.
I actually dont mind the lethality of this server. This is after a massive epiphany I know, but if the server didn't kill you, why would you even prepare? The act of preparing is a critical part of this server. While no one likes to lose, as Spoony said in his series called Counter Monkey, death is part of DnD. As others say, when you get the hand in this server, it increases your survival odds massively! Don't worry, you will survive more when you get more experience!
Keep at it!
-
As far as I know ankhegs appear from holes in the ground. You can spot them in advance. But again, I may be wrong.
-
Honestly I was using the Ahnkeg as an example. I'm smarter now, and I wont be treading foot into the Kings Forest for a while. Health and safety :P
-
While I share your pain having died countless times playing this server at the same time if death meant nothing than it would no longer be fun anymore because there would be no risk
-
if you catch me in game I can teach you IC (and a little OOC) the best ways to stay alive
please keep in mind, even the most careful player/character can still fall in this land, it is quite dangerous, but the dangers can be slightly mitigated if you take certain precautions
i play two characters and can and will make in game excuses to educate a person who is new to the city
the one character is "Rav" the other is "Cilwa Viiv"see you in game shoot me a tell anytime i will try to drop what i am doing to help (usually i am never in anything that is that in depth so should be able to come fairly quickly)
-
Yep. Darlene is the queen of character longevity. Rav is the oldest currently played character on the server.

One important key to have a"long-played' char is to not ragequit them.

hear hear!
It's fine to take a short break, if something traumatic happens to your character. Sometimes this is needed, but it shows maturity if you are able to take that break, settle down and then consider an appropriate response for your character when your pulse has stopped racing from fear, anger or depression! Sometimes taking the Permadeath option is appropriate. At other times, the ragequit because of a Bullette on a transition just takes away from your collegues on the server the opportunity to stab you in the back, or other exciting RP. Most RageQuit episodes end up with a sour taste in the mouth from you, your collegues and the DM team.
Having said that, back on topic.
Welcome! Live Long, and Prosper!
