New PC No NWN
-
Hi!
My old PC died and it's taken a while to get a new one. Anyway, I bought a 4.4 ghz quad thing with 8gb ram a 2.0 TB hard drive and a Radeon HD 6670 graphics card.
Well when I put NWN on I have graphical glitches in different places. When I updated the driver NWN won't run at all, just crashes every time. The old driver works but graphically it's horrid. I'm baffled!
I know I'm not much of an addition to the server but I still like to play CoA when time permits. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Try right-clicking on NWN, run the program as administrator and run it in compatibility mode with Windows XP. I was having similar issues with a new PC and this worked for me; it may just work for you as well.
Beyond that, I dunno.

Try turning off shiny water in the advanced video options (if you can get the game to run..) before logging in to the server, it might help? It worked for me today at least!
-
you can change the shiney water thing in the ini file too i think if it is crashing when the game screen loads rather than in the intro
-
Hi, thanks for the responses.
Shiny water is off and funny enough another option kept crashing the game with the original driver, v synch maybe? I don't recall and as it doesn't load anymore I don't recall the options but the ones that crashed it with the old driver are off.
I'm running Vista 64 and I'm truly stumped.
Ironically I'm hoping to bring 3 new D&D players to the server. They used to play BG together and for years I've been trying to get them to play NWN online. Now they're all ready for it and I'm not…D'oh!
As soon as I click to play NWN it says "NWN has stopped working" and offers to search for a solution online. All that then tells me is to check for the latest windows updates which I don't believe is the problem as I can run all the latest games.
Anyhoo, thanks again. :-)

I run Vista as well and after one of the updates (don't remember which one) my game would crash when I tried to click past the movie intros to get to the menu screen.
I was watching in IRC and someone mentioned how to turn the movies off. Went in and did that and now it doesn't crash anymore.
It does, on occasion, not respond when I get to the menu screen. Meaning its there but the buttons don't highlight when I mouse over them. When that happens, I just use the windows button (or tab out, if that works for you) to go back to my desk top then click on the game in the tool bar to open it again. Then the buttons are responsive and I can continue.
Now, on how to turn the movies off… Open your nwn.ini and under [display options] add
Disable Intro Movies=1
Save and close.Hope that helps or at least might keep you from having to sit through the movie over and over. :)

I had the same issues as angelfire but instead of removing the movies, I set the game to start in windowed mode. Then you can click past the movies and go to full screen when you're ready to enter the game. Likewise, i get the unresponsive thing and solve it the same way (go to my desktop and back).

-Run as admin
-XP mode
-Shiny water off
-You also need to make NWN run on single core only. It was just editing one number in a file… Someone more experienced might know which. -
Nope, none of the above seem to work. I've disabled UAC so I'm always attempting to run as administrator. I don't get or see any XP mode, shiny water and vsync are off. I don't know what windowed mode is or how to apply it.
This I'm assuming is the ini file. I've added and removed the disable movies as it still crashes immediately. I mean, I see absolutely nothing of NWN whatsoever, just an automatic "NWN has stopped working" no load screens, music, nothing.

I don't get or see any XP mode
Right click on your desktop icon for NWN. Select Properties. Go to the Compatability tab. Check the box under compatability mode and select Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the drop down menu.
Click OK.
If it helps or not, no idea. But that is what I run it in.

Thanks Angelfire, sadly still no joy.
It must be a graphics/graphics card issue. As I mentioned, with an older video driver the game runs perfectly but with graphical glitches. When I update the driver to the latest version (needed for more modern games etc) the game won't even start. Trouble is I've no idea what options I can use to resolve this.
Thanks to all respondees :-)

After updating the graphics driver, how about running the Setup/Configuration utility again. Perhaps it will sort something out?

If that doesn't work, you could learn how to make yourself a virtual desktop running windows xp. I don't have time to explain it extensively since google and piratebay can do just as fine. Typically you'll be running xp on your pc in a window, you'll have to partition abit of hardrive space for it, and install NWN and any applicable drivers for it, but it should work 100%.

This is exactly what I do on my Mac. Runs like a charm. Have to do this for LoL too, since LoL is fail and won't run on a Mac otherwise.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.
B-Rock. That sounds like the way to go but won't it mean buying and installing Windows XP? Things are really tight atm and forking out for an old OS to play one game is probably beyond my means. I've just got into Shogun 2 (came with the machine) and if I'm honest I'd rather spend the little I have on the follow up for that.
Or is the XP mode already an option when I partition as in when I changed the compatability mode re Angelfires post?
Thanks again. :-)

Nah bro. If you're familiar with torrents, no money needed, just pirate bay. And since a certain DM be hating on me talking about pirate bay, I'mma post what you need to do anyway:
Edit by Snakes - Don't post links to illegal downloads on these forums.
-
Yes, that DM would be me. I just like hating on B-Rock.
